as of Jan 2011 this is how it looks

I thought this would be a good time to post up my first project bike... I also have a 650 im working away at, but I bought this little guy a year ago to learn how to work on engines/troubleshoot everything.

bad paint, broken rocker arms, tank completely rusted through. I had no idea what i was getting myself into, but i went for it

...got confused for awhile (just LOOK at that big thing!)

..smartened up

So, i learnt a lot about this in the last summer. Biggest lesson learnt: don't put money into a bike that you arent sure will run again or not. Having no-one to help me with this it took a long time to fight through, but redoing the top end completley got this guy running the day before snow started and I had to move inside. I have a bunch of little plans for the winter, just relocating/re-wiring all the electrics, general clean up of crappy engine paint, re-paint everything, get some short shocks rather than struts

I know where this is going now, and when the snow is gone it should be fun to rip around on

Sr250's are fun little bikes. I wouldn't mine getting my hands on another one.

This was the one I built when I was 15 yrs old.

I know what you're getting at about putting $ into something that you're not sure if it will run.

When I bought mine, I knew it was going to run.

Just clocked over 12 months with the project and it's gone from a bunch of boxes and buckets to looking like an actual bike. Damn it can get daunting looking at it and thinking about how much more work it needs but I know It'll defintely get kicked in the guts some day!

lookin good sir.

Definatly looking better. Wassel tank fits perfects if you relocate the coil. Just throwing that out there because the smaller tank fits the proprtions of the bike really good.

No doubt, but a that king tanks was free/a gift from my friends Dad, and when the money was right it stayed. Every tank i've had around i've tested on it, and this looked best so far. I'm not really a fan, either.

Gotta love the freebies!! I was lucky and scorred an off brand wassell styled tank on the cheap. I ran that on my sr250 before i found the tank on it in the above picture.

I hear ya over the tank issue. Here's mine with little honda tank. Not sure if it's gonna stay or not yet. What length are those shocks in the last pic you posted?

Yeah the tank I'm runnin is super tiny! I'm probably gonna use a set of 9" atv shocks for mine. Want it to sit nice and low.

haha that looks a tank from one of the tanks of the "motorise your Mountain bike" kits.

It's a honda QA50 tank.

80's era yamaha dirt bike tanks work great on those things as well, here's one we did for a friend.

I've been moving around a lot the past few months, but im finally settled in a permanent home and have a garage. Sweet!

this thing has been on the back burner all summer, but its almost done. the headlight + visor made the front end look a little cleaner, and most everything is almost ready. I need to pick up some type of muffler for it, and i should be having a good time by now.

sweet dude glad to see you took my headlight idea. It'll be a bitch to get the beam height right but it's totally worth it. I'll post a pic of mine later.

So I've been doing a LOT of work to this bike over the winter. New lower Z bars, I re-installed the stock speedo, put on a front fender, new tank, spraypainted, new rear fender, old oil tank that i gutted and stuffed a battery in and put the keyswitch where the oil filler cap goes, some rear turn signals, etc etc etc.

Here is how it looks as of now:

once I get a sunny day around here I'm going to wheel it outside and get some nicer pictures. Still have to update the foot pegs, I have some tiny front turn signals in the mail, new bmx style grips, re-mount the coil under the tank, and a few other odds and ends. The pipe is rusty too, so I'll probably wrap it rather than painting it.

Odds and ends. Wrapped the exhaust and some other odds and ends. Fuck winter, man.
