BILTWELL 500 (http://www.chopcult.com/event.php?event_id=88)

It's no EDR, but it'll be a different kind of fun and you are officially invited.

Is it rollin through New Mexico? Cause if it is im in.

check your map, brother...

it's rolling due south from Temecula, CA on Sunday after Born Free bike show, which is on Saturday in Long Beach the day before our departure.

Check the link to the microsite Billdozer listed for this event.

EDR alumni can attest to the demands rides of this nature put on body and bike.

If you ride old iron, consder providing your own chase team, spare parts, tools, etc.

We won't be traveling with any such acoutrement.

Also, to the dude who asked about cops, there's something far worse than cops in Mexico. They are called Federales, and their stupid meters are set on KILL. They will extort money from you for your stupidity, and if you don't have enough money for their tastes, they will throw you in jail.

My advice: be on your best behavior, and don't try to get away with anything that's probably ilegal where you live (fireworks, DUI, guns, drugs, traffic violations, speeding, for example)

Every Mexican ride we host for our friends is a douche-free zone, so please keep this in mind. The place we are going is someone's private home, and he shares this property with other kind-hearted Americans who probably don't want their shit thrashed by a bunch of weekend warriors.

If you join us on the Biltwell Baja 500, please leave the childish props and fake badboy bullshit north of the border, and be prepared for a good, but sometimes difficult, time.

Thanks for letting me share a word to the wise...

Anybody coming from a long way out look me up and I can provide a garage to work on bikes, and have a big ass yard for free camping and a shower before we jam. I'm twenty minutes north of Temecula

I think this is the stuff that's staying in San Felipe. It'll be nice to have an adult relaxing couple days chilling on the beach.

I'll have to catch up with you in Mexico another time Bill, the Smoke Outs are right there as well. Mexico is cooler, Smoke outs are business. Too bad, were having a party in Seligman on Rt 66 and I'll venture most west coast dudes won't be joining us now. If I didn't need the business I'd head south with the rest of you (that actually make the trip and aren't full of shit).

Hey fellas, just got back from spending almost a week down there. I shot some helmet cam video of the 8 mile dirt road into the beach for ya to get a preview of the terrain and route. I'll post up some more pics of the area later too so you can see what you are getting into. The road in is mostly just your typical washboard, nothing major. Some spots require missing some deep ruts and such, but there really aren't any issues with ground clearance as long as you keep it 'tween the ditches. This was shot from my trusty old 97 XR650L so it's a little faster than I'll be going on the FXR.

OK gents, here's an open invite to have some fun in Baja. It's not an EDR by any means, but it's fun if you are into this sort of thing. This sort of thing means riding you motorcycle to the middle of nowhere and camping on the beach for a couple days. You gotta be 100% self contained and it's not for everyone, that's for sure. You can get more info here: Biltwell 500 (http://www.chopcult.com/event.php?event_id=88)

Here's a cheesy video that shows the ride in from the highway:

<object width="600" height="450"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=8528013&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;sho w_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=8f83 47&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=8528013&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;sho w_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=8f83 47&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="600" height="450"></embed></object><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/8528013">Biltwell 500 / 8 miles of dirt road to the Beach</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user631190">Biltwell Inc.</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p><p>Rancho San Antonio Del Mar is about 8 miles from the town of Colonet. Turn right on the dirt road, not far after the K126 marker, just before the bridge, on the north entrance to town. Turn right at the cattle crossing, and keep heading north west towards the beach. Corner house with unfinished garage and fire pit out front, it's hard to miss. Mostly easy wash board and gravel, a few deep ruts to miss but doable on any bike or car if you go slow enough.</p>

Here's an even cheesier edit of riding on the beach if you can make it down there.

<object width="600" height="436"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=8756718&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;sho w_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=8f83 47&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=8756718&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;sho w_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=8f83 47&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="600" height="436"></embed></object><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/8756718">Untitled</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user631190">Biltwell Inc.</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p><p></p>

billdozer
03-21-2010, 9:05 PM
Well, just got back and there is no way the road to my beach is passable on a chopper. It was going to be a little challenging the original way, but with an important bridge washed out it would be too much to ask anyone to ride. BUT, the good news is that our back up planned worked out great. More details to come, but basically we're going to go about 12 miles father down the highway and then camp on a bluff over looking a pretty decent surf break at Quatro Casa's. It's still very remote, but for a small fee to the hostel you'll get camping, hot showers, access to a BBQ, a bowl/pool made just for skating and he's going to have beer and SOME food available for purchase. If you wanna surf and don't have a chase truck to toss boards into, you can even rent boards and wetsuits there. I'll put up details on the Biltwell site and here later in the week once we work a couple things out.

Terry, I camped there back then too. You can still campout just south of it for free, but no shower, etc. This is far from a resort my friend, most people will camp, but there are a few showers and about twenty beds available. The waves haven't changed. BTW, the surf report is that it's best at high tide and June isn't a bad time for south swells down there. The water is colder than you might expect. Here's a few sneak peaks of you've got to look forward to.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4452378269_3cd25b8262_b.jpg

The good thing about this year's heavy rains is how green everything looks. This is just north of Ensenada.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4453161162_7912bebca3_b.jpg

Once you battle your way through Ensenada traffic, the highway is pretty much epic, just watch the big trucks, they haul balls. The highway conditions were pretty good most of the way but there are a few spots with damage from the rain. Expect some potholes and whatnot, but it's nothing like the EDR routes as far as being rough.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4453209010_94a2c91c52_b.jpg

You will be stoked to see this after 9.5 miles of dirt road from Highway 1. It's a little more than four houses now, but only a few full time residents. Any unsuspecting surfers camped there are going to be in for a bit of a surprise.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4010/4452435921_24ef74c519_b.jpg

When you pay the $15 per night to camp (or if you get lucky and get a bed) then you get full access to the bowl, BBQ, showers, real toilet, etc. We've got a bunch of firewood already so expect some giant bonfires along the cliff.

MIKE47

For anyone that wants to meet up, here's our rally point for Sunday morning:

Meet at Denny's in Carlsbad. Exit the 5 fwy at Carlsbad Village Drive and go west. It'll be pretty hard to miss. We will be rolling out from this parking lot at 9:00AM, so if you want to ride with us, be topped off and ready to roll at 9:00AM.

im trying my absolute hardest to make this run. im just having a hard time finding someone to drive my truck with a trailer and all my surf/camping shit. since my bike is old i don't wanna have to worry about it breaking on me down there. hopefully one of my buddies man up.

also does anyone know the rules on bringing a dirtbike down across the border? one of my friends is thinking about driving but he wants to bring a dirtbike it's not registered or anything i was wondering if that could cause problems coming back into the states.

does he have the green sticker or any paperwork on it? in my expeirence its always best to be over prepaired when it comes to mexico. dont give them a reason to fuck with you. ive always brought down the dmv paperwork. just something that matches the name and addy on my d/l

The more paperwork/registration info you bring, the better. My uncle does baja tours for dirt bikes, and they recommend having your bike legit up here before taking it down there.

England, about the dirt bike:

I've done it a bunch of times. Where you will get hassled is right as you cross the border, instead of getting the "Pase" green light, you'll get the "Alto" red and need to pull into the right where the Policia are waving at you. I've done it with race bikes that had no registration, were technically owned by the factory and on loan to magazines, as well as bikes I owned but only had old owners registration on. I just played dumb and said things like, "it;s just a dirt bike, there are no papers" or "it's my friends" he went in front of me... Not saying this is fool-proof but they've always just looked at me like I'm as idiot and said "Vaminos!" I'm bringing one in a trailer this time, and it ain't registered to me if that makes you feel any better. You've just gotta shuck and jive a little bit.

Allen

SHUCK: (slang, African American Vernacular) A fraud; a scam.
JIVE: Slang attested in African-American and rural-American culture. Frequently used to infer lying, verbal deception or trickery.

"Don’t try to jive me! I know where you were last night!"

Day 1 (Sunday)
Meet at Denny's in Carlsbad.
Exit the 5 fwy at Carlsbad Village Drive and go west. It'll be pretty hard to miss. We will be rolling out from this parking lot at 9:00AM, so if you want to ride with us, be topped off and ready to roll at 9:00AM.

Disclaimer: We don't have road captains or baby sitters. Print the map and know the route. Do your best to stay with the pack if you are worried. Once we get across the border we'll naturally consolidate at gas stations and toll booths. We will split lanes in both the USA and Mexico. But, we'll try to keep it at a realistic pace, we're not trying to kill anyone but don't want to take all day or sit in traffic either. Believe it or not, once we get into Mexibro it'll actually be easier to stay together since there is only one highway headed south. Stay on the "1"! The only place where you can get a little lost is Ensenada, but just keep following traffic south. We'll go slow through this section for sure. Once we pass Ensenada, it's easy money. The worst hazards are trucks, opposing traffic and unexpected shit in the road. Small towns have cops and speed bumps called "topes", be aware.

There are more details and a map here: 500 (http://www.biltwellinc.com/500/)

If you have general questions about Baja travel, read this little primer (http://www.biltwellinc.com/500/faq.html).

Day 2 (Monday)
Surf, skate, ride a dirt bike, rent a board, fish, fix your bike, explore around, whatever. We're cooking up a little carne asada fiesta Monday night, so that dinner is covered. We bought enough stuff today to feed about 75-100 people. I don't think we'll have that many, so there should be plenty of chow. We're also going to run a tab with the Hostel so we'll be sponsoring a couple hundred beers Monday night too. ˇAy-yi-yi!

Day 3 (Tuesday)
See Day 2. Except dinner is on you. Eat what you brought or buy something from the hostel, or catch it yourself and toss it on the grill. We've got a custom painted helmet/trophy that'll get awarded some MVP Tuesday evening. This is also the night we burn the boat. If you park or camp close to the old wooden cabin cruiser on the cliff, this would be a good day to move. Seriously.

Day 4 (Wednesday)
Get the hell out. It'll probably be a rough morning considering the previous night's activities so we'll just play it by ear and retrace our steps. Anyone coming on four wheels, be prepared to sit in traffic at the border while the bikes split lanes and dodge churro carts. Here's a couple videos, one showing the ride headed north from Ensenada and one the border crossing at TJ. There is no meet up point after the border, just go home or wherever your next destination is!

What a rad time. Sun, surf, girls, riding in Mexico. Fireworks.
Yeah I could do that full time. I just gotta figure out how to get paid to do it.

We foolishly split a day early but the ride through a burning country side was amazing.
no problems worth mentioning aside from a slack chain in Tecate whic was easily fixed.

Pulled into Temecula after blasting up the freeway at 90 only to find my frame had broken. not cracked, but broken.
I figure it happened outside of Tecate, hence the loose chain.
So it goes.
