I like to go on long rides and don't really have to many places other than the bars to strap things down. So I came up with this idea, I need to re-wrap the tent but you can get the drift..or maybe not.

that's a good idea if you don't want to run a big-ass sissy bar. does it feel unbalanced when you're riding?

Well like I said " once I roll my tent better" there is 3" from the chain the hook , If the chain hits the hook I've got bigger problems.

Chain and back tire. I've seen and heard horror stories about guys doing things like that and getting them sucked in. Make sure everything is rolled tight and strapped real good.

Don't know I put it on about 10 min ago, Probably fix tent and ride this weekend to test it out. Can't be any worst than having all that crap, back pack and tool bag strapped to the bars/forks.

I dig it.

You can even make up some kinda saddlebag deal that you could carry for everyday stuff. Something with some sleeves on the outside to slide over the uprights.

Yea I had a back pack strapped to the rear fender and it got sucked into my rear and only break, Man was I suprised when I tried to stop for gas.

thats a good idea! i think you'd be all good if you roll all that shit up real good and use a few bungee cords..

nothing like a 75 mph suplex, courtesy of a tent.

Cool shit man! I think you should start like a "campin" thread with this. A place to post exactly this sort of thing plus other tricks/ niknaks what ever's good for campin on a bike with no room to pack stuff. Just a thought. Might be kinda gay.

I was just looking at my back fender trying to figure out how to make a rack to haul my tool/lunch cooler to work without it strangling me on the first stand up dismount if I tried to just strap it around my chest/neck...this idea has potential...as long as it doesn't kill ground clearance...my ride to work has some serious potholes,(friend of mine lost an axle on his Subie....thanks for the idea.

I could see your potential "tent in the tire" problems solved with a nice chunk of leather slung between those meathooks.

whitehorse gear sells compact tents and also compression bags that would help you get that tent under control

fuck yeah man. I was actually thinking of something similar to mount on to stash my skateboard. I dont want a big sissy bar or anything and dont want to just sit on it either. that rig looks perfect.

good job, looks functional.here is the deal,i like the fact that you came up with a solution to a problem that you had and you followed through and built it.i dig it.
the thing i like about building my own stuff is even if it fails and kills me,i was out there "doin it"not sittin on my ass tellin someone there idea sucks.
the world is overpopulated anyway, sometimes i like to push it just to see if maybe it's "my day" .

Functional shit isn't gay...it's useless shit that sucks.

our local drunk has a very well known saying when people refuse to give him a ride, cig's, change, oral etc...
" well then, up your ass with a meat hook" It is a good idea though...

Man there nothing gay about it, a compression bag would be your friend though cuz the wind always fucks with anything that gives resistance and will probly open that thing up on you after a long trek. Compession bag=no resistance . A little support brace from the bottom of your "J" hook to the lower frame strut would insure that your hook wont crack after a 2 to 300mi run being that you are running a rigid big twin .
Looks cool man. run it!

I can dig it. I'm always looking for ways to strap more camping bullshit to various bikes, and I think that's a good idea.

I would offer up the "all yer shit in one bag" advice though. Make it as wind resistant as possible. Plus, whats it gonna do when it fills up with rain? I'd wrap the whole thing in a poncho or jacket and secure with compression straps so gear doesn't start flapping around about mile 200 and you have a yard sale on the freeway. I've got riding buddies that just bungee everything loose for days on a sissy bar and some times it works and sometimes I'm dodging water bottles and quarts of oil at 80 mph. Also seen a guy last year on the side of the road in Baja when his sleeping bag got jammed in the wheel. He was real lucky he didn't get more hurt.

Anyway, cool idea, let us know how it works out long term. Camping from your bike is great, so a functional mod like this is neat to me.

Most of his ideas do.

Good job Tyler, I would cinch the tent and bed roll up tight and stick them in those big zip lock bags. Maybe cover the inside of the bags white so it looks like yer haulin two big bags of cocaine down the road. Or a rebel flag or texas flag or you git the idea.

thats a great idea, you could get a thick piece of pvc pipe and just paint it so it doesn't look like shit and cap off the back end, and then if you had a compression bag your shit would probably fit right in there and you wouldn't have to worry about anything getting caught in your chain or wheel. Just an idea, you'd have to figure out a way to keep the pvc pipe on your hooks. Once again though, nice work

You would be suprised on how much time and thought go into something so simple. I have about a dozen hooks that just weren't right.

Great idea. You can get a sea bag for the tent that will keep it all together and dry a a bone. As a bonus, you don't have to worry about it getting sucked into the chain.

I dig it, a compression sack to tighten it all up and keep loose ends away from the chain would be a good idea. Of coarse us mountain people opt for just using a tarp and string, packs small, lite and Ive spent a few nights under just a tarp during a 12" snow storm in the collegiate range with no problems. I have a bivy sack now, basically a waterproof sack for your sleeping bag rolls up even smaller, check em out.
