I'm looking for pictures of sissy bars you guys have built for your stock framed Sportsters. I've been looking online and the only production pieces I've seen that I liked use the hideous mounts that go on the outside of the frame strut covers.

The only things that came up in my search was a thread about a swing arm mounted sissy bar with a frame mounted fender (doesn't make much sense) and a thread about sissy bars on hardtail bikes.

Like this? Where it slides in the middle of the fender and the struts?

Yeah, I'd like it to fit in between the fender and the strut and kind of "disappear"... or at least so you can't see the mounting brackets.

That's a really nice piece. I'm not looking at cutting my fender off that far up though. I'm looking at cutting it just after the stock frame horn. I still have to go two up for my girlfriend.

yes, this topic was just covered a couple days ago, and has been covered many times before that. i agree, the search tool doesn't seem to work well for me, either. someone will post a link, i'm sure.

rene seems like a real stand up guy. i'd love to have him do some work for me, but i'm broke. i've always loved slim's work, but i've never seen it in person either.

are you interested in making one? i used some 5/8 roundstock that i got for 7.99. i heated it with a propane torch and bent this up. as for the side mounts, i agree, they look stupid. especially the quick release kits. i bought some sheet metal the other day, and i'm gonna cut out some smaller plates that will go between my fender and struts. altogether, i've got less than 15 bucks in materials. not sure if i'll powder coat it or polish it up a bit.

for bolt on bits, go to Krome Werks, they've got fixed mount side plates, and a few sissy bars to choose from.

I'd be fine with making one on my own. I have both square and round stock in my garage right now. My only problem is access to tools. I have basic hand tools and some power tools. But, no welder or torch set. I'll probably end up going back to the shop at my school once it's all back together and use everything there to fab one up.

I bought a torch similar to the one for sale at harbour freight. You can get one for less than $15. You have to heat it for a while, but it works. I suggest a vise of some kind too. I actually made a small jig. I've got very basic tools, and most of them are cheap. Ive also seen guys heat their round in campfires and on grills. The jig is helpful to keep everything symmetrical.
