View Full Version : FINALLY, my 1950 750cc / 5speed Frankenbike of awesomeness!!!

Okay, so many of you (or at least image1) have repeatedly asked me where the hell am I with my pre-unit build. Well, as of last Friday, my 8 year battle with carefully blending multiple bikes together harmoniously reached new ground as it is finally a running bike. So, I present to you my 1950 framed Triumph with a 1973 T140 topend and crank assembly shoved into 1954 cases (for the big bearing) with megacycle cams, converted 5 speed gearbox (http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=649) with Bob Newby belt drive, Alton generator and a Norton commando fork and twin leading shoe front brake. Also, the bars are BSA, the throttle cable junction is Vincent and the brake light switch is Harley. :::whew::: I think for now on when people ask me what it is I'll just say; "Yes!"

I built the motor and gearbox (with finishing by Hugh and Fumi at 6 st) , my buddy Neil whipped up the stainless pipes, top motor mount and Harley style pogo seat while Corrina (miss1932 on cc) did the leather. (I'm eternally grateful to all four of them for pitching in to help) I'm going to run it unpainted/plated for now to work out the hiccups but at least I finally have something to show you guys.

I'm sorting through a gagillion build photos which I'll post but in the meantime, here is a quick video my wife took as I embarked on the first (of many) shakedown runs:

I really can't believe I actually rode the thing after so many years of trips to machine shops, scouring swap meets and solving major mechanical issues. I hope you guys dig it.

Thanks Branden. Yeah, the top header angles in (you can see the weld under the kicker) to provide ample clearance. The gearbox was also set in the tightest position (even though I'm running a belt which wont stretch quite like a chain) to make sure the kicker wouldn't touch.

Oddly enough, I figured out I need to open up the inner primary cover a bit to allow more slack in the belt as the mainshaft touches the cover when I push the gearbox as forward as it will allow. It's loose the way it is but I'd like it a tiny bit more as initially the belt was too tight which caused drag on the main bearing making for some difficult shifting.

Hey man, I got busy..with um...stuff.

It probably would have taken less time had I not been distracted by getting my flat tracker ready every time I had a race as well as rescuing a second dog, work, volunteering on the USS Intrepid and getting married. Man, what a time killer that was. I mean, I spent all that time dating her, couldn't she just leave me alone in the garage?! I kept telling her I had shit to do on the bike but she would be "hungry" or just "want to spend time with me" or "have conversations." Christ! Blink and 8 years just seems to go ::: poof! ::: Also, I'm sure if it was my only bike I would have had more of a fire lit under my ass to get it done.

Sweet . I was worried when I read the title about a 750cc 1950 preunit . But once I read it , thats awesome .

Ther must be somthing aout these mismatch preunit builds , Mine has been going on since I was 17 and I still have not ridin it .

Here's how I bought it:

The motor started out as a stock 54 with no internals. Everything you see is just mocked up so it would look like a bike.

I began by selling off the spring hub rear wheel as well as the complete front end. I traded the repop fender for an original one and the gas tank you see was so rusted out it had to go.

I had a really nice '73 t140 motor that I decided to use as a donor for the build. (Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of it but it looked like every other t140 motor) I then tackled the gearbox which I converted to a 5 speed.

how bout the primary rotor cover with the triumph logo?

The primary cover is a modified version of the one that came on the 1953/1954 5T Speed Twin and 54 6T Thunderbird models and hides a Bob Newby belt drive. My friend Neil machined the cover to match the Norton twin leading shoe front brake and whipped up the inspection cover which gives a nod to the unit bikes.

just wondering, cuz my primary cover has like a thin chrome plate that may be homemade.
so few around to compare it to.
thought about making something up.

You might have the original inspection cover. It would have been a chrome plate that was slightly domed with a flat edge for the three screws.

I have been in the just starting stage for a while. You must be feeling good because you have nice touches all over this bike. Great Triumph.
