View Full Version : 100th Anniversary Sporty "Build"

05-28-2012, 7:42 AM
Not so much a build thread but rather a timeline of changes I've made and will make to the bike. Sold an 05 Yamaha R6 and picked this thing up a few months ago.

From the CL ad
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n278/sbc500/hog/419679_10150599142648201_509343200_9140248_9188939 37_n-1.jpg

Had to be a cool a guy and take off the fender

Then I got some new bars from Zombie Performance and some ridged struts.

Also got a new headlight so I could get rid of the unibrow.

This is the most recent project. The tank needs a bit of touching up but im pretty happy with it. The rear fender got chopped tonight so hopefully I can get some paint on it soon too.

Thats all for no but seeing as how I cant leave things alone there will be more to come.

05-28-2012, 8:02 AM
Good start! Ditch that seat and get a new intake!

05-28-2012, 8:13 AM
Thanks man. The intake is actually the next thing on the list, I really hate that ham can. I'm still on yhe fence with the seat. I'm not crazy about it but I'm not sure what to replace it with. I really dig the biltwell banana seat but I want to keep the 2up option. I plan on hardtailngb it this winter at which point I want to do a true ridged seat. I'm trying to to make changes now that I will have to change again when I cut it in half.

05-28-2012, 8:15 AM
Looks good, intresting choice for paint but damn cool

05-30-2012, 6:33 PM
Im going to see if one of the local shops can weld some bungs in for me so I can get the tank mounted. In the mean time Im going to get the rear fender painted. More than likely going to keep it simple and do solid black.

05-30-2012, 9:08 PM
looking better but i really dont like the bars... they only look good on my bike ! rofl

06-02-2012, 11:34 PM
looking better but i really dont like the bars... they only look good on my bike ! rofl

haha the second I saw the bars I had to have them. Sooo much better than those apes!

I got bored tonight and wanted to see what the new tank looked like. I am beyond stoked on it. I just need to get some bungs welded in so I can get this bad boy on permanently. The tiny tank makes the seat look even more miserable so Im going to need to get that sorted out next.

09-15-2012, 12:03 PM
Finally got my tank mounted. The welder I was using at first was a garbage 90 amp that just wouldnt cut it but my friend ended up letting me use this giant old mig they use for fixing tractors and what not. Its crazy how much easier it is to weld this stuff when you have the right equipment.

also got rid of the forwards and put on some 10.5in shocks. Its a lot more fun than with the ridged struts.

09-15-2012, 8:01 PM
Pretty sweet Nate. I got a black 100th ann with 288 miles for $2700 a month ago. Doing a lot of small stuff here and there. Once I get my new tank from Eric at Jake's Customs, I'll post pics over in the Sporty Thread.

09-15-2012, 8:59 PM
Thats a sharp looking bike and I knew I recognized it...you work at NW downtown in DSM right?

09-16-2012, 9:41 AM
thanks dudes and yes I do work at NW, im guessing you work there too? What bike do you ride?

09-16-2012, 8:04 PM
What kind of pipes are you running? Still have the forwards? Looks great!

09-16-2012, 9:30 PM
Thanks man. Pipes are rinehart and I do have most of the forwards. Snapped the the brake rod off in the MC. How you ask? I have no idea.

09-17-2012, 4:07 PM
I work over in the 1100 building, but lately i've just been riding my mismatched 04 sporty with the ness fairing.

I work over in the 1100 building, but lately i've just been riding my mismatched 04 sporty with the ness fairing.

Oh nice! I saw it parked by me the other day.

Havent got anything else done sense the tank. Still need to figure out the seat because I hate everything about this one.

the lady looks awfully badass on it tho haha

10-01-2012, 7:54 PM
Looks nice man. I dig the paint on the tank.

I have a solo seat set up for the same bike if you are interested. It is the one in my avatar, but doesn't have to be used with that seat in particular. Made by V-twin.

Also have a used dunlop tire that will fit your rear. Looks like you need a new one!

The bike is a real fun ride. What was involved with going from forwards to mids?

10-01-2012, 8:04 PM
Thanks for the parts offers but Im gonna pass. Ive actually got a seat in mind if my home brew one doesnt pan out. Im not real confident in my sewing ability so we will see what happens. My rear tire is reaaaal sketchy haha. New tire is on order tho.

Forwards to mids is a breeze. I basically just lurked ebay and bought the individual parts. Saved a bit of coin over buying the full set up from one person. You will need the brackets the pegs mount too, a shifter and and brake pedal with the rod that threads into the MC. Also, there is some wonky bracket/spacer used in the oem set up to line the MC up with the pedal. I didnt want to pay shipping for that pies so I just made my own spacers and everything works sweet. Like I said, real simple and one of the best things Ive done to the bike so far.

10-01-2012, 8:29 PM
I honestly don't see that many modded Sporty's here in Des Moines!!

10-01-2012, 10:48 PM
No problem man. I have a gold wing which has mid controls and the riding position is super comfortable. Not to mention it handles like a dream, especially for a garbage wagon. I am 6' tall too. But, the seat is high and so is the bike which makes more room for me. I am still debating putting them on my rigid sporty. I guess I will wait until it is done and ride it to see how it feels. Thanks for the input.

10-02-2012, 6:06 AM
Yeah man Im 6'2'' and was a bit worried Id be cramped with the mids so I left the forward pegs on but I almost never use them.

05-08-2013, 9:54 PM
Well Its been awhile so I thought Id update this. New seat finally. Also decided to paint the back wheel and pulley since I had it off to get new rubber. Its real real close to being esthetically done. Stil a few things on the list tho.

07-06-2013, 10:36 PM
A bit more progress.

Moved the coil and key.
cleaned up the fork legs. Still need to get the fender mounts off tho.
took some sand paper to the pipes to make them less chrome.

Still on the list.
need to go all the way through the front brakes.
Paint front wheel and fork legs.
Remount the key
New AC

Also thinking about making up a sissy bar to haul around my camera gear. I HATE hanging it all off my back.

Also had my speedometer and rear view mirror break off within one week. Speedo and dummy lights are staying gone. New mirror is going to be on order soon because im paranoid.

It's kinda funny that some old guys advertise 100th anniversary bikes or tins like they're made of gold. They look much better chopped up. Sell off the tins to an old man who thinks he's going to be around until the 150th anniversary, then they will be worth a fortune.

Good start so far.

07-07-2013, 5:37 PM
Haha I know it's crazy. I keep meaning to put the tank and front fender on eBay. The stock rear fender is the chopped one on the bike now.

Thanks I'm pretty happy with kings so far.

07-30-2013, 6:48 PM
The more shit I get rid of the more I like this bike. Cut the heat shields off the pipes and wrapped them. Looks way better if you axe me. That ac needs to go next.

07-31-2013, 12:47 AM
Yes looks great man! Still got plans to hardtail?

07-31-2013, 1:02 AM
It's still on the table but I'd rather do something beyond a standard weld on. Right now it's beyond my ability fab wise.

08-05-2013, 7:05 PM
Got a new toy. Stock ignition died so I swooped an ultima. Mixed reviews on chop cult but pretty positive everywhere else. Got it for 100 bucks. Not going to complain.

Kept the VOES (figured why the hell not)
Kept the dual fire (Would prefer a single fire but I didnt realize you needed a new coil)
6000 rev limit
Curve 3

Anyone else run one of these? How is yours set up?

Bike runs like a champ now.

Been rollin around on mismatched wheels for awhile now.

Checked another thing off the list.

god damn I love those tails. Makes me wish I started my chop a year later

03-04-2014, 11:10 AM
Nice! I ordered and received my kit from Haifley Bros. I ordered that exact kit pictured above. It's awesome and excellent quality. Good luck, I look forward to following your build.

03-04-2014, 11:18 AM
I'm Stoked on it. Seems like it's really well designed and the king and queen is what really sold me.

Looking a ton better and has personality. Nice bike man.

03-04-2014, 6:22 PM
How did you mount that headlight? Just drilled through and attached with some sort of bracket there?

Drilled straight thru the tree and just used the bolt that came with the headlight. Light is from lowbrow.

Started tearing the bike down tonight. Would have had a bare frame if we had a socket for the pulley nut. Maybe have it to the frame tomorrow. So stoked for this frame to show up!

Killer! Do you know where you are gonna put your ignition module? I'm getting nervous on how i'm gonna wire mine, when my kit comes in. Every bike using this kit looks killer, I don't want mine having shit wiring to clutter it all up. I hope with an antigravity, I can put it in the battery box.

03-17-2014, 12:22 PM
Luckily my ignition isn't under the seat, it's on the engine. So I don't have to worry about hiding it. I'll tell ya tho the wiring is what I'm looking forward to the least. I'm just doing it as basic as possible. I already don't have blinkers or any wiring on my bars so it's just on a be a lot of stripping out the shit I don't need. UPS says the parts will be here Friday so once I see it I aught to have a better idea how things will work out.

Got the frame cut and the new tail in place. I clamped a level to the down tubes and measured back to the end of the dropouts and im coming up with 1/16 difference on each side? Is that going to be an issue or should I try and get it closer?

Put it back on its wheels last night and got most of the rest of my parts today. Still need to get a tail light, oil line fittings, and run thru the wiring. Another thing, after dealing with a led sled hardtail on my friends bike i was a bit leery about how well the engine was going to go back in. Haifley Bros did a sweet job tho and the engine went in just like stock and bolted right up. No problems at all.

nothing can be done to a sporty that makes it look better than one which is rigid IMO... they just look soooo good. great job, dude.

03-30-2014, 12:34 AM
Thanks fellas

I got a ton done today. All that's left is redoing an oil line because I cut it too short, putting the brakes back on, and making sure the wiring works. If all goes as planned it'll be on the road tomorrow.

03-30-2014, 2:40 AM
great build man, im thinking of ordering that hardtail kit eventually next winter really gives you that chopper feel.

04-06-2014, 6:04 PM
Im calling this done(ish). Still a few things I wanna do but I wanted to get this thing on the road asap. So stoked on it. Seriously cant even believe its mine.

Haha you ever get a wild hair up your ass and just have to do it before you pussy out? That's basically what happed last night. was in the garage 10min and I had the neck cut off. way stoked on what we have planned.

11-07-2014, 12:38 AM
Haha. That's the way to do it. Can't wait to see what comes of it.

Best hard tail/kit out there if you ask me. I just figure since the bike is completely apart and was never 100% dialed anyway I might as well go crazy with it.

Got all the joints prepared and now just need to bend some tube and weld it back together. Super stoked on how this is shaping up.

8 up 2 out with a 28 degree neck isn't going to look Swedish. I feel like this photo is a bit deceiving.

I am doing similar but just cutting the lower legs and moving the back bone up and out a little to match the about 6 inch of stretch on the downtubes. Going to end up with about 42 degrees of rake.

You going single downtube?

You going single downtube?

Yeah. I'm going to put a hoop on the stock tubes just above the voltage regulator then run a single tube up to the neck.
