I live in the western 'burbs of the Twin Cities and I'm trying to find someone who builds or has a shop or just knows what they are doing when working on bikes to hang with and learn from. If you need some shop help and can teach me a thing or two, I can work for free in my spare time and bring beer! I have been learning as much as I can reading forums and books and have been working on my own project. I TIG weld for a living and go to school for welding and sheet metal fab so I'm not totally useless! I just feel the need to get plugged in to my local chopping community!

well, well, well. I am building a 1979 sporty chop and can't weld. I am in Apple Valley, hit me up some weekend and you can come on down. I am usually tinkering in the garage then...

Do you have a welder at your place? I can bring beer as well!

Well well well! I live right around the corner from him, and I do have a welder at home if he doesn't! And What a coincidence! I drink beer!!! Ha ha. I got a tig at home, maybe he can give me some tips on making my welds purdy also.

I'm down south east of the metro, more towards Red Wing and Cannon Falls. Most nights I'm putting stuff back on my ironhead that vibrates off.

I remember you were going to move out here. Have not seen you on the boards in a while. let's set something up soon! I have a pile of shit that need welding and am almost to the point where I cannot move any further until it is done.

I unfortunately don't have a welder of any kind yet. I was using the old shop i used to work at but the owner is in and out of jail and cut his finger off last time I was going to weld for cash for him so I avoid him and now I do everything at Hennepin Tech where I go to school. Taking summer classes just so I can use the shop for my bike! But seeing as my neighbor to the west here has a TIG... I'm free pretty much every weekend anytime anyone wants to hang, wrench and weld! I will bring the whiskey since for some reason I can't stand beer!

I will be in the shop, all evening friday, saturday, and sunday.

I am in the final stages of finishing Flourman's rubbermount chop that I have been working on for the past few months. I should be getting ready for breaking it down for paint, etc.. here in the next week or so depending on a few things.

Man, what a day. The brats were great, the weather was aewsome and Scott is a welding machine! For those that missed it, too bad, we will have to do another.

Scott, I hope you are noodling the exhaust idea we came up with and think of a price you are gonna charge me.

Here is all of his hard work mocked up!

You are welcome! As far as the exhaust goes, it will depend on what you want and the bends I need to order. I have a few ideas that would go good with that frame, but ultimately it's your bike so what ever you want to do. But I would not want to have anything concrete until your rear tire is solid with the axle spacers and drive chain is in. But I have an idea that would be pretty badass, I think.

This might be an odd inquiry but is there anyone out there with some kind of shop that could use some evening and weekend help? I'm talking unpaid, just want to learn and be around the stuff kind of help? I have a full time job welding already and I go to school for welding and sheet metal fab but work is well... Work and you can only learn so much at school... I can Mig, TIG, stick and oxy-gas weld, have some experience with a mill and lathe, shears, brakes, grinders, etc... And if need be I can sweep a mean floor... I am just really looking to get plugged into the scene for all that here so if anyone is interested or knows someone who might be, let me know!

shit man if you were close to me in NY I would let you get some practice in at my place
hit up some local shops and talk the owners and see what they say
face to face is probably the best way to go about this

I kind of fell off the world with summer semester at school but that's winding down so if anyone wants to get together, bullshit, wrench, build or drink in the near future let me know!

Quoted for the use of "Rad" twice in one post. Probably going to throw together a Wild Ride pre-party down on the Commune if anyone is interested. Short ride to St. Paul in the morning.

Your best bet is probably to just find a cheap bike and start into it.

I lived down by WI Dells for a while after I moved back from Alaska, and now I live near Eau Claire, and I still don't know anybody that chops actively. Been on my own with it for a while. You should have better luck around the cities there, but I've noticed that most of the shops around here fail really fast, or won't go for outside help, or they turn into bolt-on shops. Not easy making money if you're chopping right.

Should be able to find a few guys to drink and chop with around the city, too. Might be a better way into it. I'd offer, but I'm pretty far away, and I'm really new to it myself. Also have 2 boys under 3 years old, so don't get too many chances to work on my projects.

Gonna have a get together the night before the Wild Ride, then ride into the cities for the ride. Shoot me a note for my addy. The wife will be cooking a cream can for anyone who shows up.
