What about tack welding in a 3mm piece of steel into the axle slot to make up the difference?

What if you drill your holes to a size smaller than 17mm, around 5/8" I think, and use a die grinder or a couple different files to get your shape? I punched mine on an iron worker and used both to clean them up. they arent perfect but they work and and are the right size. That or try and get a 17mm drill bit to get the exact size.

I marked out the slot, used a drill to do 4 smaller holes and used my die grinder to open it up,I took my time and got both slots damn near perfect it really wasent that hard just took some time...

a machine shop shouldn't charge much to do it. One quoted me $20 to cut the axle slot. but we do quite a bit of business with them at work.

Awesome job! I agree though, a machine shop may not charge much to do it if it's easy to vise down on the mill. But if you saved yourself $20 then hell!... now you got a week or 2 worth of beer money!
