Does anyone know if a stock 2-up seat from a 1987 Sportster will fit on a stock 1996 Sportster XL1200? I see that usually Sportster seats fit 82-95 and then 96-03, but then sometimes I see that some seats fit 82-03 so whats the deal?

Also, I don't mind if there is a gap between tank and seat, all I want to know is will the older seat slip in and line up with the stock mounting bracket in front and stock hole on the rear fender? Thanks all.

Here is the seat..sorry cant get a bigger pic of it

I am almost certain it will fit. I just borrowed a two up seat that looks similar from a friend who took it off an ironhead he bought and it fits great. If you had a pic of the underneath I could tell you for certain. There will not be a gap between the seat and tank either.

Here is a couple shots of the seat I was talking about. It also went on a 96. Hope this helps.

That seat looks awesome!!

I emailed the guy and asked him about the bottom and for some pics. I hope it works I would be stoked to have a lower profile 2-up.

I did have a question though: What size tank do you have on your bike? On my '96 XL1200 I have the 3.3 gallon tank and I know on the '87's they had the smaller 2.25 gallon tank, will this affect if the seat will fit or not? For example, will the older seat butt up against the back of my tank because it is larger and thus not fit?

You are probably good. I can tell you from experience that some factory seats from 96-03 are not backwards compatible but most older seats are forward compatible. That first seat is my favorite seat and the one that I run in my 82.

Ok very good....if its forward compatible that would be awesome!

Out of want of knowledge: Do you know why they are backwards compatible and not forward compatible?

Also, took a look at your pics and man you really did a great job bringing back that sporty....it was really something when you got it.

Stock tank, same as yours.

Look at these two factory frames. The first one is supposedly an 82 and the second one is supposedly a 97. You can see why.

Hi, I have a 2001 Sportster Custom and I'm looking at a Badlander Low Profile seat online for it. Whats the best way to measure a seat to find out if it fits? The person online who owns the seat is measuring it one way and I'm measuring it another way.

I measured from the bottom of my tank to the last screw hole on the fender ( 26" )

He's measuring from the last screw hole on fender to the middle of the seat ( 16" )

So again, what's the best way to measure it so we're both on the same page?

Thanks
