So being somewhat knew to riding I dont have much to compare to. I can how ever give my thoughts on my new lid! So i just bought my first real bike yesterday and I needed a helmet to go with it! I really wanted a Non DOT biltwell helmet... but the wife had other idea's....(im lucky i even convinced her to let me get a bike) so being that i HAD to get a D.O.T. helmet I started my search! I almost bought a biltwell Hustler but didn't wanna look like a mushroom head. While on Craigslist I keep noticing these cool looking lids.... So I email the guy about what sizes and colors he has. Finley $60 latter i have what you see below!

Behold!!!!! the 3/4 Outlaw Flake helmet

Ok my thoughts - NOT what i really wanted but for the price not to shabby!!!
It sits higher then i wanted and I had to take my plugs out because it was really tight on the sides... but while riding felt good! No wind noise or anything.

Over all... want a cool looking cheap D.O.T. lid.... pick one up! :D

Next on to do list is get it striped!!!!

You could alWays get a dot sticker and stick that baby on anything. I have the Daytona cruiser 3/4 and it sits really low. It's DOT and I could be wrong but it may be a lower profile then the hustler (d gets banned) the gold flake one is around $70 but I think the regular black is about $50.

To be honest though I never got the point of non dot helmets. I mean if you have/want to wear a helmet shouldn't you reasonably protect the melon?

I don't think it looks awful, I mean let's face it you look like you got a big fucking head man. Maybe it's a camera trick but you look like George from the game rampage. Just kidding bro.

Bike looks sick too man congrats.

Detale, DOT helmets aren't everything you think they are. Do a search and there is a great thread with TONS of helmet info. I believe it was even Bill or someone who posted and article about how helmets get the DOT and Snell ratings and how those translate into real life scenarios. Worth the search.

I will search for that one, just never thought about it. But to bottom line it for me are you saying that non dot is safer than a dot rating?

Jasonisdico

Not necessarily. DOT ratings require a dual impact test if I remember right. Something like 90% of bike accidents are single impact. I would say that MOST dot approved helmets are probably better than non, but with helmets that have little to no styrofoam/polystyrene linings, they are probably very similar for most cases.

SNELL test procedure:

DOT test:

NOTE: The DOT testing does not require a chin bar test, and is not as strict as SNELL tests.

Nice bike n cool lid. Snoop around on the inside, just glancing at the pictures it looks like there might be some padding under the top you can take out for it to sit lower.

I bought a DOT German style helmet years ago and the thing sits so high it looks like I'm balancing a watermelon on my head.

I told my wife I was getting a bike again after being off one for a long while, her only response was "You're not getting a bike unless I get my own because I'm not riding bitch." That I can respect, course everything else is needs before wants The Kid changes priorities a lot.

I can't see the Model No. on your tag, but that helmet does list the FMVSS 218 test standard. I can only find one Outlaw model helmet NHTSA has tested under the DOT FMVSS 218 test standard, the Model X155.

According to this 2008 report (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=fmvss%20218&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CEsQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nhtsa.gov%2Fcars%2Ftesting%2F comply%2Ffmvss218%2F2008s218.pdf&ei=dPCNT9W-HNSltwfKnNXSCw&usg=AFQjCNH6l61o2k-krDMRwlFh6kk9Thkuvg&cad=rja), the Outlaw Model X155 helmet failed the FMVSS 218 test.

Keep in mind that in the USA, DOT never approves helmets. DOT sets test standards. NHTSA tests helmets against that standard. DOT testing under the guidance of NHTSA only fails helmets after they are released to market. This means that a purchaser could buy a helmet and operate under good faith that the helmet was compliant with the DOT requirements set forth in FMVSS 218 and at the same time be purchasing a helmet that subsequently failed NHTSA testing.

Additionally, the government does not have a list of helmets deemed compliant by make and model number, and it makes no list of helmets, by make and model number, which have been deemed not compliant.

Also from the reports, Outlaw appears to be a LeatherUp "house brand" that is actually made by Rodia, a Chinese helmet manufacturer. Rodia has a history of helmets failing NHTSA testing, but, alas, that is for another day.

My best guess is that you already have your coveted non-DOT lid.

Absolutely. In my experience cops are super reasonable and would enjoy hearing you opine on the intricacies of motorcycle helmet testing during a traffic stop. :D

Speaking of lids...
***ATTENTION BILTWELL***
I was down at a major San Diego area bike shop (Vista to be exact) getting tires put on my bike and I had some time to kill so I wandered around and looked at some of the newest offerings from the land of the rising sun. All I have to say is out of all the bikes I looked at only 2 new bikes caught my eye. A Rebel 250 and a S40 Boulevard (aka Savage). Then I walked around the riding gear section and was looking at all these new fangled 3/4 Helmets. Some were ok others complete cheese then I saw one that made me do a double take a 3/4 helmet with HUSTLER on it. First thought HOLY SHIT A BILTWELL!!! Second thought WTF?! There's a company that is labeling their helmets with HUSTLER on them... Now this suspect helmet may have HUSTLER on it but nothing on it anywhere that says anything about Quality Counts. Its a "HUSTLER" edition of a 3/4 helmet thats plastered with nudie magazine black and white images. Am I wrong in thinking this product may be trying to cash in on a Murrieta company's success?

Yeah, I read about this years ago. DOT only provides a spec and the manufacturer builds to that spec. All that DOT number gets you is a way to sue the manufacturer if the item fails and you can prove that it wouldn't pass DOT standards.

Basically, DOT stamp mean pretty much nothing. It's just a way for the government to get money from manufactures and ticket money from citizens that don't use the DOT equipment.

If you really want a safe helment, get a SNELL approved one. Otherwise it's all BS.
