View Full Version : Finally......My bike

We I got a little time off being Easter Sunday, So I decided to slip into shop and clean up some stuff, I noticed my frame sitting on the floor and I had a empty build rack sitting right next it so I thought I'd go ahead and mock it up.
I blew the motor trying to haul ass down to the Slab City Riot in 2010 and it's been torn apart ever since. I did a mock up with another front end a while ago trying for a different for look for Grace.
Some of you might remember my bike when C/C did a news article on it, here is a link to http://www.chopcult.com/news/articles/tony-dunns-triumph-chopper.html.
Well, here is the new look, The new theme appears to be "Old Chrome". The motor is almost done now so I need to get it together for the ride to Born Free 4.

thanks guys, I'll try to get some more work done on the motor, I need to put the head on and then open up the trans and find out whats up with second gear.

anyone out there got a pre unit TR6 trophy (shorter) rear fender for this bike??? I'll buy it or trade parts for it.

More pics as soon as I get the motor done.

Brandon- the frame is chrome, but it's all old chrome.

Pete,
I've got a whole bunch of cool old parts I've been saving up and I'm just gonna put it together with all those parts, the engine/trans is gonna be newly rebuilt with some more trick parts on it

Schweeet. Hey, I dig those webco extensions.

A quick question for you, I have a 73 head I'm planning on using. It has those ugly cast alloy, chunky intakes. Any reason I couldn't replace them with the cool ribbed ones? I'd have to add the balance tube right?

yes and no. the distance from the carb to the head in respect to the exhaust flow greatly affects the power the engine makes.
by reducing that distance you will reduce the magic rpm that all the torque curves cross each other.
the 1.75 diameter pipes make power at a real high rpm and the shorter intakes make power at a lower rpm. if you want to go with the shorter intakes it will work but Triumph was trying to make more power with those longer 73 manifolds.
and the balance tube helps but is not mandatory. my manifolds have a balance tube added in but most Mikuni manifolds don't have any.
check to see if the carbs will even clear the rocker boxes without the stock manifolds, that may decide it for you.

Yeah, it's ok I guess. Personally, I thought that frame looked better in it's previous life with a '74 T140 motor stuffed in it sitting next to a hut in Farmington New Mexico. I almost forgot what an adventure it was picking that thing up.

But seriously, your bike looks killer. What are you going to do for an oil tank?

Torch

I'm planning on using a stock 54-59 tank and tool box but I need a old chromed one, you got one Pete?

I spend all damn day finishing up the engine today, had to rebuild both monoblocks, soda blasted them and put the full Amal 389 repair kits in them, then pulled the trans apart to find a lot of rusted parts and a broken gear.
here is a pic of the finished engine...<a href="http://s457.photobucket.com/albums/qq294/A1dunn/?action=view&amp;current=motor002.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq294/A1dunn/motor002.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Nice work Torch.....is the timing case a modern repro?...I've just fitted a modern one on my bike and can't say I was impressed with it.Some of the mating surfaces where exposed because the new case must be a tad smaller.A thread was stripped in one of the grub screws holding one of the gears in the tacho drive, and the gears in the tacho drive didn't mesh freely.....anyways,seems to work ok now.

Bob and I got the trans done today . . .

There's why it's taken so long. You and Bob arguing over HOW it should be done!
However, it IS looking good.

Torch
06-08-2012, 2:37 PM
yes, as you know, and then after all that Bob put the wrong inner trans cover in it, (I kinda missed it from a supervisory standpoint) the one in the picture is for a slick shift trans and has no clutch cable mount.
Fuji and I fixed it today..

got some more work done today, I had a dilemma about what seat to run, solo seats look good but I wanted something a little different, so we were looking around the shop for a seat when Andy spots one of those good looking Biltwell Sportster seats in our parts store. We held it up to the bike and it looked just enough different to work.
What do you guys think ??http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq294/A1dunn/mybike012.jpghttp://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq294/A1dunn/mybike006.jpg

Nice, really dig the seat on there, def looks at home

starwolf
06-11-2012, 9:52 AM
It is certainly a nice seat, but my eyes, tell me that the front portion of it should be slightly shorter, to allow the seat to come down a bit closer to the frame, and contour with the fender more gracefully. It looks like there is a lot of room between the bottom of the seat and the frame, and a bit of space between seat to fender, just my thoughts tho.
*Don't take me the wrong way Torch, man, I respect you a great deal,(likely much more than you realize) your one of my mentors! I know your a man of many means, you could shorten it by an 1" or 1 1/2" (or what ever you need) and have it recovered, likely even being able to reuse the Biltwell logo tag, have them stitch it up the same, a photo may help w/ this) then you'd have a 1 off Biltwell seat ! I'm not sure what this will do for your mountings, you may have to move them around a bit, but, again,...you are a man of many means. I also think deep down inside in the back of your head, you were questioning the seat, which is why you asked what we thought.

Yeah, he's like a trial lawyer and seldom asks a question he hasn't already answered. And yeah, he can exercise two or three options for every possibility. I think the deadline is driving this bus!

The big question is . . . will he just pull that headlight off, put it back in his goodie box and sell the bike after the show. hmmmmm?

CRFyou
06-11-2012, 6:07 PM
That seat can work on a Triumph for sure. Smash it down a bit!

I've been thinking about that seat for a while to put on my '59. But I don't want to risk the cash without mocking it up first.

Almost there Tony!

Torch
06-11-2012, 8:26 PM
alright guys, leave that headlight alone, and the seat is done. I'll run it like that until I change it or sell it. I belong to the "Get it on the road" club... I've got 2 weeks to go before I ride this bike to Born Free 4.
Yes it's real easy to buy a reproduction Bates headlight and bolt it on and say that's done, but in the interest of being different I'll run the 7" King/Bee with a Lucas lens and it's already there.
besides, this was the whole front end that was on Andy's chrome frame red and white pre unit, (until he stuffed it into a Camry)

yes, best way is to send an email parts request to the shop @ www.ClassicCyclesInc.com

I can answer any tech questions and advise you on parts or repairs and then Amanda will take care of everything else as far as ordering, payments and shipping.
