View Full Version : how NOT to be a hater

everyones a critic, seems like with every fad, fasion, style, music, or hobby someone is always hate'n on someone elses shit, either its not cool enough, not real enough, not somethin enough...

I've been involved in all sorts a different things and i've found that anyone that knows there ass from a hole in the ground can find respect in something a person really puts time and effort into, even if its not their style.

i've found that to be especially true with guys who are involved in this whole world, our world.

whether your a chopper guy, bobber guy, cafe guy, someone who likes to do restos and keep bikes stock or people who just do their own thing we can jump across boards and really appreciate some quality work.

its good shit, i love bein a part of that

so keep choppin or shinnin or cuttin or whatever the fuck ya do because if ya do it well and with some heart it will be noticed

I agree that the time, effort and work put into something, especially when the talent shows through is to be appreciated. But at the same time I dont think we need slobber on the knobs or cup the balls of everyone who does something good or coool - as if it were the first time it had been done, unless you sincerely enjoy the work or it really is uniqe and original. I'll be the first to tell you if your work doesn't appeal to me, but I'd also be the first to admit I'm no critic and no one calls me in the middle of the night axing for my opinion. It's just that - mine, based on my taste.

I wouldn't paint hummingbirds or wolves or indians or skulls on my bike, nor would I paint it green. So I'm not going to hump your leg if you have the coolest wolf painted on your bike, EVER. If I bought it from you I would scour that fucker off that night. BUT, that has nothing to do with respecting the talent and the inspiration that layed down the image or the design.

So while I agree with you that there is no need to hate or dis on what you don't like, no one should be held back from voicing their opinion. If your baby is ugly, someone should and will tell you. If you don't like being told your baby is ugly, dont pimp it in public.

At lot of people seem to get hung up if someone doesn't validate what they do or ride or what they put on their bike. Shit YOU have to ride it, if you like it, it passes. I see a lot of shit I can't imagine people doing to perfectly good machines, and then I can't believe they have the balls to ride it. But they do, and hey, they are riding and chopping and their bikes have some character, even if it is demented and tormented.

If wide white walls on hardtail sportys are becoming passe and the new bellybutton bike, don't be surprised when people yawn if you post the pics. But, again, that is a style judgement, not a judgement on the hard work and talent.

At the same time, a pair of Vans and a plaid shirt don't make you a master builder... whatever the fuck that is.

When they posted that hummingbird bike, sorry, I'm not cupping anyone's balls because it's something different or "new". I didn't like what the bike looked like with the art. Was it swell work - hell yeah. Was it more than I could expect to do spending the rest of my life trying - hell yeah. Do I have to like slobber on someone's knob because they got their pics posted on Chop Cult or Cycle Source or the Centerfold of Penthouse? No.

I hope that isn't hate, just reality. If you want to buy me a beer and tell me why my bike sucks, awesome, I'll drink to that.

rev mike, totaly agree, i don't think criteque is hate'n, just an honest assesment based on someones opinion

although i may not dig somethin i can normaly appreciate what it took to do it, i think that only comes from learning to do shit yourself, if someone just purchases their scoot already "customized" then there is no real concept of the skill it takes to do so.

i'm glad yr not all about suckin dick and hummingbirds ;)...cause that would be gay...but hey, thats just my honest assesment lol

Ha lol

I'm sure an angry hummingbird could be a formidable adversary... but if I wanted a bird on my bike, I'd hire Audubon (http://solomon.eena.alexanderstreet.com/images/S3144-I042.jpg) to paint the little fuckers.... Since he's dead, it isn't really an option...

Well, the awesome thing about CC is that it welcomes a lot of different bikes and styles. I've yet to see anyone actually bash another person's ride on this site. As long as the bike "fits" the chopper theme, its accepted, no matter what kind of bike it is or what "style" the builder chose. It's really easy to spot when someone "gets it" and when someone is just a poser riding a bike for status or attention or whatever.

I don't have the time to keep up with these threads. If someone doesn't like my shit the first thing i think is their fucked. Lets see your shit then. I never have had that happen so i was speaking as if i had that happen. My shits tight.
This is what happens when you hang out on the trendy side of the fence. People just getting into building shit or riding or whatever sees it allot different than people that have doing it a long time. If you have any self confidence in what you do we won't have threads like this. I agree with do want you want, but why do people have to remind others that? Here is a picture to give everybody the confidence to move on to tomorrow

Fuck you. Fuck your bike. Fuck your coast. And fuck your scene.

Wanna know why I don't post pics of our builds?
Cuz I don't give a shit what you think about it or what seat you would have put on it or where the oil filter should be. The only thing I care about is a happy client and a paycheck. If building an bike you think is ugly will put food on my table, I'm in. If you don't like it..scroll up.

I gotta ask WTF is axing? I always thought that AXING is something a lumberjack does? Do you mean ASKING? as in when someone ASKS your opinion? I hear alot of wannabee gangster's over here in the UK saying the same shit...it always puzzles me why they just can't say ASK as opposed to AX when the two words have completely different meanings and make no sense in the way that they have been used in a sentence such as the one you have used?

other than that I dig your post...

ps...not dig as in I want to get a spade and start digging your post but 'dig' a term that was used in the 70s meaning yes I agree with that whole heartedly and like what you have done, said etc..

~Rev Mike

I know that these don't make you a master builder....but they're on the checklist right? I mean I roll up my jeans and wear a 3/4 helmet just like the rest of us, but the shoes make the man right?

Build it. Don't build it. Ride it. Don't ride it. Be honest and give respect. Sometimes telling someone your honest opinion, especially a friend, isn't easy. But in the long run they will respect you for your honesty. People put so much into their machines its hard not to take criticism personally. Sharing your personal tastes is not a personal attack on another.

Well, since you brought it up and you're in the UK (and at the risk of sounding like a total knob), you might be interested to know that although it sounds funny to you, or is a sign of poor English skills when people pronounce it /aks/, the modern word ask comes from the Old English acsian, which evolved into axen in Middle English. Quoting Chaucer:

"I axe, why the fyfte man Was nought housband to the Samaritan?" (Wife's Prologue 1386)

Around the 14th century, via the linguistic process known as metathesis, the /s/ and /k/ phonemes switched. Your wannabe gangsters probably aren't imitating Middle English as an attempt to revive Chaucer, but you should know that this sort of switching of consonants is common (in American dialects and elsewhere, the words nuclear and asterisk are increasingly being pronounced /nukulər/ and /astərɪks/).

Betcha didn't think you'd learn that on Chop Cult! ;)

Why worry about haters?.... on the other hand... if you made something that looks like ass to me.... I will probably tell you... and if i respect you and I make something that looks like ass.... I would appreciate the input. ...... In the reverse, if you never made anything and all you can fixate on is the oil leaks and the sratched up body parts on a 40 year old bike I pieced together..... you should not make comments anyway.... and I will probably tell you to take a flying leap into a rolling donut.

Far be it from this simple blogger to dispense hate (http://crownlounge.blogspot.com/2007/07/things-i-hate_27.html), but I feel I must point this out at least once on every fledgling forum:

Their = pronoun which denotes possession by a group, as in "their metal flake helmets and Vans shoes identify them as modern outlaws."

They're = contraction of the phrase "they are," as in, "they're going to Adam Street Donuts this Saturday to measure cuffs and pompadours on '50s greasers in rat rods."

There = adverb denoting a place or position, as in, "Over there—right next to my '09 Sporty with the 27-inch apes and the whitewall tires."

I only felt compelled to do this because some of the stuff I read on CC is damn near indecipherable, what with all............... the .................... periods................ and run-on sentences and OMG +1 "do whatcha like, 'aight" gangsta speak and ghettofied spelling and what-not...............

thanks for the history lesson BUT i'm not interested on historical English grammar just the English language that is spoken now...so axing to me still implies a job that is undertaken by an axe man/lumberjack or indeed any other trade that requires the use of such implement..

I really appreciated RevMike's comments on my (the hummingbird) bike. I hope the bike's NOT for everybody, and if it someone ever bought and left it that way I would think they were completely nuts! Every bike says something about the owner and they should be unique, and if RevMike doesn't like the combination of birds and bikes than that's cause he's got a fucking opinion. Fucking Right On. That being said, a lot of people dig it, so that's cool too.

Oh, and RevMike, my next build is literally going to have a Maytag washer/dryer combo painted right on the tank just to show you that I can make that look killer, too ;)

As Jason43 pointed out, I think revmike was joking. Regardless, my point was that there's no such thing as a "correct" way to speak English. In addition to urban centers, "axe" in place of ask is still used in the Midlands and the south of England, as well as in some places in the east and south of the United States, so it's not exactly a history lesson there bro. Hence the examples of nuclear and asterisk.

As far as speaking the "Queen's English," I'll reserve that privilege for *ahem*...queens.

Ah, so there is no "correct" way of speaking English? So being taught English is what, something to do? Christ I better let all the folk that I know who have children in school that its pointless and it will lead to nothing. Man I wish I read your post 20 years ago.

Seeing that you like to quote Jsson pointing out that Rev Mike was joking maybe you should try to understand different forms of humour and sarcasm - I knew what he meant so don't worry yourself about having to point his out to me.

By the way, I live in the Midlands as you may well know due to my profile and I can say with pure conviction that I know of not 1 person that says AX instead of ASK, yes there are some dim witted fuckers around here that can't string a sentence together (possibly due to them not listening and learning to speak ENGLISH POPERLY) who seem to think that its pretty cool to talk like a wannabee but really folk just look at them with either sadness or pity...but hey i'm just glad I went to school and learnt to read and right...I mean write (ooh look flat humour or sarcasm) otherwise I would sound like a fucking retarded deadhead...

I had a friend(RIP Waylon) that re-painted his bike and was going for a rootbeer with big metal flakes with scallops like had on an old muscle cars he had painted years ago. It ended up looking like a turd and I don't think anyone straight up told him it was turd, but no one really talked about how awesome it was either. We were at a rally with a bike show, and he asked if there was prize for the ugliest paint, because he could have won that one. Funny shit.

The Midlands is a big place, there's no way you know everyone. But yes, I would argue that there's no correct way of speaking English. People have been arguing about this for literally centuries. To say otherwise is called prescriptivism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linguistic_prescription) in linguistics, and it gets murky pretty quickly. In fact, telling people what one considers the "proper" way to speak is just as flawed as telling someone what bike is deemed "acceptable" to ride. Generally, everyone of a certain region or class favors their dialect and rules over those of any other. Surprise, surprise.
I'm not here to tell you what to do or how to live your life. In fact, you say you live in the Midlands? Are you from there? I'd venture a guess that your dialect is non-rhotic and you pronounce intervocalic and final /t/s as a glottal stop, whereas most other English-speakers around the world articulate the /t/ as an aspirated alveolar plosive. Received Pronunciation actually derives from the Midlands dialect which, in the past, was considered the prescriptivist standard. But that standard has since migrated to (or been usurped by, however you want to look at it) a dual standard of General American dialect and British Non-Regional Pronunciation.
The point is that language ebbs and flows over time. If someone tells me I sound like too much of a hoodlum because I don't speak the English of Spenser, I'd tell them they sound like a blackguard for not speaking the English of Gower (before there was a Queen!). We'd both deserve to have the shit kicked out of us at that point.
I never said teaching English was a waste of time, I have an undergraduate degree in English Literature.
Anyway, forget it, I shouldn't have said anything. To tell the truth, it gets on my nerves too when people say "axe." Unless they're joking, as was the case with revmike. Shake?

Okay drama queens, I anticipate a shutdown of this thread in 3...2....1....

You think Audubon is good? Check out this guy, Walton Ford, and he's still alive so he actually could do your bike;

I would TOTALLY let Walton Ford paint my bike.... I'd RATHER have a fucking MURAL on my wall though.

Just for future reference. Many dialects contain words that have sound change "reversals". Axe for ask is a common one in English. It has nothing to do with imitating gangsters, except for people who are imitating others for whom it is actually part of their speech. Dialects change more rapidly than written language, of course.

English is the most flexible language on Earth. Pretty much if you understand it, it's English. I don't remember CC being based on any Standards. That includes open borrowing of foreign words and phrases.

I love English, taught English in school.

Just thought I'd splaine micelf, even though no one Axed.

Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) (And thank YOU Sly Stone).
