Spent 4 years in the USAF as a 130 Crew Chief
6 years in the US 7th Cavalry (we consider ourselves special US Army... as in retarded) working on OH-58D's, bending tin and bucking rivets.
and a year in the Texas Army Guard as a CH-47 Chinook crew chief/flight engineer.

Now I work for DynCorp in Korea on Army fixed wing aircraft that listen on what the fruit loop commies in the North are blabbing about on the radio. That's about to end this month where I'm transferring back home to NAS Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, TX to work at an Army Reserve fixed wing site.

willy, there's lots of small and a few large helicopter companies looking for wrenches, if you have the credentials.

go here---> http://justhelicopters.com/tabid/281/category/2/Default.aspx

just a tip, stay away from the forum there, it's not a healthy joint. i'm sure you know how helicopters pilots can be sometimes...;)

p.s.-if you get an interview with a hospital based service, EMS, or public service aviation department, PM me, i'll give you a few "cultural" pointers.

im going to get it to the point that it needs to be welded on then buy a case of beer for a buddy and have him do it.... the instructions come with the kit of what you have to remove (kansas city customs) so i dont know what it involves. but i know i can take shit apart....welding is another story.

To work for the Gov't as a mechanic without your A&P you need to work for a contract company like Dyncorp, LSI, L3, CSC of Helicopter contracts. All the fixed wing contracts for the Army require an A&P. Don't fret, some schools aren't too bad in getting your license. Dallas School of Aeronautics was a 3 day affair for me when I was on Terminal Leave from the Army in '02. Practice test on the first day, written tests on the 2nd and Oral and Practical on the 3rd day. I got tickets for the power plant because my maintenance officer in the Army at Ft. Hood was an A&P and wrote a letter of training for the FAA after I would volenteer in the engine shop. Being that I was a Crew Chief and a structures mechanic the FAA would only give me the ticket for Airframe.

The Army recently changed how they award contracts. They award them by geographical areas now. LSI has the west coast and pacific rim (Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, Korea), CSC has east coast and Ft. Hood, TX. Dyncorp has the Middle East and Europe.

Army Vet - 75 - 83, now working for the Navy - WTF is up w/that?! Stationed at Ft Hood, Stuttgart (Patch Barracks) Germany and then the shithole of the world Ft Polk... Anways, enjoyed most of my time, till I got caught with my ol lady in my wall locker, but that's another story! Things sure have changed since then.

i'm sure this will piss a bunch of people off, maybe even get me death threats...who knows?

i'm an iraq vet still active in the infantry. army 11b. here's what i've seen in my military experience, and frankly it makes me ashamed to admit i am even a part of the armed services:
-false machismo and absence of moral courage,
-pathetic bullying and fear-based leadership,
-widespread bigotry and dehumanizing hatred,
-complete lack of integrity in all levels of leadership and junior enlisted alike,
-open contempt for soldiers wounded in theater,
-worse contempt and stigma for those willing to admit they may be suffering mentally,
-swept-under-the-rug incidents that should've sent people on long term bids behind bars in the real world,
-and about a hundred other things that are accepted as standard operating procedure that make me disgusted to be in uniform

we're supposed to represent a higher standard. we are supposed to be better than this.

anyone who wants to deny this shit goes on daily and would like to discuss it in person can pm me for a home address and detailed directions.

Rider, let's not derail this thread. It was meant to be a list where people can see who's in, who's served, where people are stationed, etc. If you want to start a thread about the shortcomings of military culture and values, feel free to start one in the Junk Pile where this sort of thing is discussed.

Rider, First off: Thank you for your service. I would say that anybody who has served can relate to some or all of the problems you detail in your post. You are 100% entitled to question what you have seen and experienced. God knows, there are things I wish I never saw, but at tha' same time, my experiences in tha' Army have contributed to who I am today. I must agree with Billdozer in that you should open a new thread and see if anyone agrees with your viewpoints (You may be pleasantly surprised). Tha' one thing service, and combat in particular, does is "lift tha' scales from one's eyes". Tha' world isn't as shiny and clean as it once may have appeared, but this is a good thing, IMO. Respects to you and take care out there, Rider. Tom

Just noticed this thread...shows how much I pay attention. Been active for 12 years as of this month. Diesel mechanic. Been all over the world, from Kentucky to MD to WA to Germany to AZ to El Paso, TX now... Lots of trips to Iraq, Afghanistan in between and even Israel (may be the greatest country I've ever visited, actually...but I digress.) Nice to see others in the military loving the chop. I don't know what I would do if I didn't ride my loud, greasy, scraping Shovel to work every day... Pissin' off the neighbors at 5am so I can go pound the pavement.

I have done 6 years so far (11B). First duty staion was Fort Bragg with the 2/508. I was in an assault company all 5 1/2 years there. Got to jump out of planes, reppel from choppers, go to sniper school, countless cqb courses and demo qualitications. All was put to good use on 2 deployments to Afghanistan. 1 in RC East and 1 outside Kandahar. Now, I'm a fucking Drill Sgt at Fort Benning. Everyday is the worst day of my life. I hate yelling and screaming. I also hate getting a haircut. Pretty much everything you think of when you think of Drill SGT, I'm not. I've got another 1 1/2 years before I can go back to "the line". I can't wait.
Sorry to bitch. I'm on Staff Duty and its Saturday and 68 degrees here. Lame.

I was a Machinery Repairman from 75-79. In 78 I was aboard the USS Vulcan out of Norfolk, Va. We took a cruise down to Ft. Lauterdale and they let us load our bikes on board and unload in Lauterdale. I went into the active reserves when I got out with the intention of retiring. After two years my smart ass decided I didn't need to play Navy any more so I quit. One year latter I have a motorcycle accident and broke my back. Had rods wired in and went on with my life. In 87 I moved to Fl. and got a job at Eglin AFB. Started working with a bunch of retirees and figured I needed to get back in. The recruiter said I was good to go and even let me retain my E5. But when I went for my physical, the doc said I couldn't come back because of the rods in my back. Quitting the reserves was by far the dumbest thing I have done in my life.

Was active duty Navy from 94-00. Stationed aboard DDG-59 for four years and then Naval Station Rota Spain for two years. Did two deployments to the gulf, been around the world twice and only got out because my girl got pregnant...what do you know we got divorced two years later. Would have hit my 20 years a few months ago, but I'm happy with where I ended up.

Had to fight like hell just to spend year 4 in Okinawa (including getting my security clearance pulled and a General Courts Martial - Not Guilty by technicality, it's a razor thin line in the military but I bet they still are down on weed) .

Anyway 1978-1982 USMC
