I just wanted to do some research on engine parts/compatability, but im stuck on something

i bought a bike + ownership. all numbers match, and the bike ownership says its a 79... the bike was the xs650 special II. mags, dual disc front. When i look up the VIN on this site ( http://www.650motorcycles.com/XS650yearID.html ) im hitting a stump.... the vin starts with 447-91XXXX, which would, according to this chart, mean its a 77 XS650D.

Reason im interested is because I have a spare engine (s650 129XXX) making it a 72 XS2. I wanted to find the correct manual to use for the 79 and the spare engine to see what is compatable/what I should avoid. So far just from digging into them i noticed the earlier model i have uses the cam chain sprocket tensioner, while the 79 uses the silder.


can anyone just let me know whats up with my 79? Is it possible they just used the frame + engine for a 77 model and built it as a 79 special model in the factory?

Seeing that you are in Canada - it's probably a non-US model.

As far as the engines go -


1970 thru 73 are refered to as 256 motors, the 74 and and later are 447 & 533 motors while the bore and stroke are the same for all 650's some parts are not interchangeable the 447 & 533 might be preferable just because there are more parts available, the earlier years did have slightly more horepower, cams were different and the machines were lighter however they also didn't handle as well, short wheelbase and flexible frames, smaller front fork tubes also affected the handling

I know im pressing my luck here, but have you ever seen a list of things that aren't interchangeable?

Pretty much what I have is the 79 with rockers that are completely worn out, and i was going to pretty much swap the top end from the 72 to the 79. I noticed the cam chain set up was different so i put it on hold till I figured this all out.

EDIT: that was wrong. I am not changing the top end, I wanted to just swap the rocker box with rockers from the 79 worn out ones to the 72. not changing the cam shaft.

any extra links you have would be cool, too. I have tons bookmarked but any extra would be great.
