View Full Version : XS650 SLC project bike

Starting a new project this winter. I'm doing this build completely different then my sportster. The rules that I am trying to hold to is that the bike must be ride ready at the end of every weekend. No complete tear-down on this one.

This is what the progress looks like after the first weekend. (I rode it... but had to sit on a pair of folded up levi's).

I want to drop the front forks at least an inch and half maybe 2"... Anybody done that on one of these XS650 front ends? Need to change the fork oil out, so they are coming apart regardless.

Was "riding the lightning" what you had in mind when you rattlecanned that front wheel all euro-flouro?
By the way, I think I've got just the vintage MX tank for that thing, provided Sean hasn't sold it yet. Lemme take a look tomorrow...

haha...You always get me laughing! It's brighter than I wanted. But it was the only lime green I could find at ACE hardware. And I don't know if you've heard but ACE is the place. Actually the sporty almost went roadrunner lime green. So I'm trying to make up for it now.

I would be STOKED to get a different tank for this thing. Been looking for a Aermacchi MX tank. Let me know what you guys have. I'll get you some of the purest caffeine on the planet!

Front wheel is killer! Interesting take trying to keep it ride ready every week. See how long that lasts before you say screw it and strip it down.

I reckon I had a link to lowering XS front ends without upsetting the preload too much.

Can't find it now but I'm pretty sure if you go to xs650chopper.com and look in their tech section you'll find it. I can't get to that site at the moment, work blocks it for some reason.

Dug into the front end this weekend. The legs needed some serious love. Drained the 1 ounce of sludge out of each of them. Then shaved the fender tabs and casting excess left by the factory. Cleaned them thoroughly then dropped them 2" internally. Gave them a fresh coat of satin black and put them back together with 7 ounces (1ounce over factory level) of maxima 20 weight oil. SUPER happy with the feel of them after getting them back together! Here's a couple pics of how the weekend went.

Also, put some drag bars on. They are a bit wide but thats another weekend. I still need to get the rear wheel rattled up LimeGreen....

How'd you go about lowering the front end? Chopped spacer?

You are correct sir. A chopped 2" spacer on the damper tube does the trick.

The sportster was even easier because you can cut a piece off of the top spring and slide it over the damper tube (kills 2 birds with 1 stone), because you need to cut a piece out of the top sping to be able to compress them after dropping them.

The XS forks are a bit trickier than the sportster forks also because the bolt that holds the damper tube in the lower leg is fine thread instead of course. If you don't break it loose from the begininng it will just spin inside the lower forks. You'll lose about 2 minutes worth of work time just swearing uncontrolably at the top of your lungs (at least I did).

Yeh, that's what I figured. I'll probably do the same, but doesn't it change your spring preload on the suspension and will change the ride.... I'm not sure what tangible difference it makes though...


On second thoughts, i'm not sure that it does change the preload? I've not reassembled my forks yet, I'll scratch my head a while longer while I work this out.

Well....

After two weeks of winter storms I have decided to collapse on the keep it together build and tear this thing down to the bones.

Looks like it only took a month before I finally cracked and broke it down. JayTucc called it.

Engine should be out tonight and then we can start the frame fab and other things on the much broader "to do" list.

It has been slow goin. But progress is still being made.

Engine is pulled. Built a rolling stand. It fits under my work bench perfect!
All the excess tabs on the frame are getting cut off and smoothed out. (as well as Brat style dropped seat.
Starting to polish the lower case and engine components. Just a sneak peak of that for now.

Frame is coming along slowly...

Yeah doing a brat style drop seat. Already have the hard tailed sporty. So wanted to try something new.

It's been a couple of years since I've done anything with Chopanese. Life got busy and the chopanese colllected rust. I sold my sportster and have longed for a hardtail again. So, plans have changed. I read the article about getting motivated and here we are. Time to follow Johnny Cash's advice and "GET A RHYTHM"
