Hey everyone My name is Owen and i am new here. I call Truckee, Ca home but I am in Bozeman, Mt most of the year. seems like an awesome forum, nice to see a spot where you want get blasted for building a jap bike. So I picked up a 79 cm400T for a couple hundred bucks about a month ago and i am working towards a 'brat style', soft-bob or whatever you want to call it, build. might go pretty slow for awhile but it is shaping up to be a fun build. This is my first moto build but i have been riding since i could walk. I have some decent fabrication experience doing work on rock crawlers and prerunners and have a shop and CNC plasma table and 3 axis CNC router at my disposal for awhile. Hope to get some good feedback/criticism!

Day i picked it up, already tore the rusted ass megaphones off. pretty clean machine. runs like a champ.

as it sits today. waiting on some fenders and shocks from ebay for the rear. 10.5" struts for now.

I have drag bars on there now but I am not completely sold on those yet, thinking about getting a little bit more height. I am digging the way the stock tank flows too. need to get rid of the mickey mouse ear gauges too. everything is pretty rough at this point

my buddy rode had one of those. he had it set up alot like yours is in the second pick. i agree that stock tank is killer.

man I dig on the cm 400's they can lend themselves to some pretty cool shit, I think there are some pics of one i did on here somewhere. also if you'd like www.myspace.com/dirtydschopshop just look on the photo albums cm 400 you can see from start to finish. good luck and keep posting pics !!!

Bike looks like it has tons of potential. Tank is cool. I'd say either stick with the drag bars or go with some mini apes.

11-19-2009, 3:11 PM
yeah i was thinking about slapping some dirt bike bars on there and seeing what that looked like

11-22-2009, 8:32 PM
Nice. Good to see another person in Bozeman

First, I would take some pictures of what you have and sketch out some ideas. Have fun, make your own while borrowing some things from others.I have attached a couple of links for you. I have a '81 Hondamatic (CM400A) that I'm gonna copy some of slaughter city's ideas. Dont be afraid to try something different or ask for help! Good luck!!

12-15-2009, 1:35 AM
yeah slaughter citys bike is an inspiration of mine. got alittle bit of progress done and have gathered some parts. gonna push at the beginning of january to get some work done. got a furniture project that i HAVE to get done by thursday.

If you go with the dirt bike bars go with something like the 1" Pro Tapers or something along those lines.

Sweet avatar by the way!

so a little progress, should be updating more frequently from now on. Its warming up so I have some extra motivation. New headlight which i made a bracket for, new shocks, fender and drag pipes mocked up. I dropped the front forks but dont have new pics of it.
decided the fender is going to be frame mounted not swing mounted
considering using this old chainsaw oil/fuel tank to stash the electronics in, its small enough to fit under the seat and above the battery.

03-03-2010, 2:35 AM
Looking at polishing the front forks and putting on fork boots to balance out the rear shocks. still up in the air on paint scheme(???) working on mounting the seat and finishing the hidden turn signals in the cut frame rails. what do you guys thinks so far, I'm going for low and fast...well at least in looks.

03-03-2010, 2:58 AM
That's a rad idea. I did a 78 CB400A (very similar to the CM) but more in a 'Cafe' style. Going to be doing my brother's 1980 CM400 soon. The frame style is better suited to a bobber.

I like the direction you're going in, keep the updates rollin'..

04-13-2010, 10:35 PM
damn progress is going slow, dont have much time to work on it but i have alot of stuff that is almost done. I finally got all the prep work and paint done on my tank and will do the fender after i get it mounted. waiting to spray the clear until i have the fender done. what do you guys think? its all dupli-color rattle can. metallic charcoal, metalspecks silver and metalspecks burnt copper. sand, bondo, primer, sand, glazing putty, primer, sand, paint... prep works a bitch but well worth it in the end. the pics are shit, looks way better in the sun and the metalspecks paint really pops but it is snowing here...alot.

lookn good

Thats lookin' good! Nice work!

getting really close to being done, here are some pics. the huge speedo is temporary.

took it out for a ride and at about 4-5,000 rpm it starts running like shit. sounds like it keeps missing on one cylinder or something and i cant get it over 45mph. I cleaned the carbs and richened the jets after i put the pod filters on this winter but i might clean them again. next i am going to synch the carbs and see what that changes. I also pulled the plugs and one is really rich and the other is kind of lean. any ideas?

05-12-2010, 1:04 PM
Sweet bike - I was having the same issue with my 71' cb450 twin which is kinda similar. I had to increase the backpressure they run like shit with no baffles, clean and re-sync the carbs, then I replaced the timing advancer. I'm pretty sure that the timing advance finally fixed it but I'm putting on mufflers for good measure.

05-12-2010, 3:04 PM
hmmm yeah that is kinda what i was thinking, it ran pretty well last fall before i pulled the mufflers off. I sync'd the carbs and that has really smoothed the revs out but after 4 0r 5,000 rpm it just doesn't want to pull

05-12-2010, 3:38 PM
First off, Great looking bike. I have a 400t also

However, I can't figure out how to lower my idle, it idles around 2500 and the idle adjust knob under the carbs does nothing..

Any ideas?

05-12-2010, 4:26 PM
hmm might wanna take a look and make sure your idle bolt isnt stripped out could be that simple

05-12-2010, 7:36 PM
Looking sweet. What made you decide to frame mount the fender? I bought an el cheapo speedo online...no sense in spending good money on something that I wasn't going to pay attention to anyhow. Good job so far Dude!

05-12-2010, 7:45 PM
Didi you get fork boots yet? I want to see what they would look like. I have a CM400T. Nice bike!

05-12-2010, 8:11 PM
Where did you find fork boots?

05-13-2010, 12:30 PM
I haven't gotten the boots yet. i was looking at the ones from cyclexchange

08-23-2010, 8:24 PM
good looking bike, i like how it sits with out being chopped, i just got a cm400 about a month ago, this is some inspiration. any up date flicks yet??

08-23-2010, 8:57 PM
Yeah i will put some up soon. The rings crapped out so i am in the middle of a top end job. Should have it together soon. Has been really fun bike though

08-25-2010, 2:58 PM
do you know anything about a possible 5th gear on the CM? ive been to acouple of website and they talk about a 5th gear, but i can only count4 1down 3 up.

08-25-2010, 3:36 PM
Its definitely a 5 speed transmission. If you can only find 4 something is wrong. The stock gearing is a little too short to be on the highway for very long. I just switched the stock 16tooth front sprocket for a 17, that should hopefully make enough of a difference in the rpms. six gear would be amazing though.

CM400's are a 5 gear. I have one in my backyard right now. The bike needs to be moving sometimes to shift gears..

08-29-2010, 5:14 PM
yeah even when im riding i cant seem to get into 5th, my bike is a cm400t would that make a diference?

08-29-2010, 8:42 PM

Nope, because that's what I have. Try adjusting your clutch. If that doesn't work, there's something wrong with your transmission.

08-30-2010, 3:45 PM
mine is a cm400T as well, sounds like you have a problem. I haven't played around with transmissions very much so i couldn't tell you what is wrong or what to look for.

08-30-2010, 9:33 PM
fixed, adjusted the clutch all is fine.

Knew it. You're welcome.

so finally some new photos, got it back together with a fresh top end and spent a couple weeks diagnosing carb issues and ordering obscure little parts. It is still not running perfect but good enough. smaller gauges, tail light/licensce plate bracket finished and battery box. i also polsihed the forks and put some cyclexchange fork boots on, i think that combo looks tits. let me know what ya think

im living in Buellton, ca in the santa ynez valley right now. If anyone wants to ride let me know!

Great stance on the bike man, looks real good. But those rims are begging for a new coat of black! hahaha

05-13-2013, 11:40 AM
What shocks are those? I see that a lot of rebel shocks have eyes on both ends and yours has the end that straddles the hole to bolt to the swingarm. I'm looking for something like that.
