View Full Version : "The Hipster" 93 Sporty build

After riding my stock Sporty for 2 years I decided I wanted to make some changes. I've been on this site for a while and got a lot of inspiration from the builds and bikes I've seen in the Blogdump. I've debated going with a hardtail but after finding a Crazy Orange bike online I immediately knew that's the direction I wanted to go.

I met Buster here on CC and followed his build and was amazed with the work being done to his Pan. http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8406 We took a ride out to Lee's (Builder) shop this summer and discussed what I wanted to do. Dropped the bike off and here's where we're at. I made a sketch off what I want to do.

Stripping it down

Quick mock up, changed up the stock shocks for some progessive shocks.

I still have a bunch of parts to remove and clean up the motor and frame. Lee started fabbing the tank and bars. I'll post some pics when I get them. Waiting on my rear tire to mock up the fender and sissy bar. I thought of a 21" wheel up front but I really like the look of all black stock wheels. Lee has some awesome ideas and plenty of skill to make them happen.

Starting to like the swing arms better than the ridged's my self. Narrowing that tank will be cool or maybe a p nut frisco. I know your seats just hanging out up there, but you might take into consideration the reach on your bars. Looks to be way out there. Gonna be cool though.

Found these on google: love the syle, going this way but chubby for my shovel.haha

About time you put down the PBR, and got to work creating a build thread on this bike, you hipster...

Looking forward to getting out to the shop and seeing this thing coming together. Lee said he took a bunch of pics while he was chopping and fabbing the tank. Looking forward to seeing it. I like the pics that easyspeed added as well - particularly the second one. Are you guys still talking about doing a set of window bars for it?

Now that I see the bike cut down a bit, I kind of agree with you on keeping the stock mag wheels and just doing them black, rather than going with a 21.

I'm headed down to shop on Tuesday and I'll grab some more pics. I talked to Lee today and he's going to send me some pics of the tank, psyched to see the progress. I'll update as everything comes together.

As for the bars I want to lose the stock clamp and go with some t bars.

No, I bought some Progressive shocks from someone I met at the shop. It's a Hugger so it was low to begin with.

Update

We continued with removing all the live to ride stuff, exhaust and chrome accessories. We mounted the new tire.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-06113723.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-06113723.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Lee had worked on the tank during the week. He removed an 1"3/4 from the center of the tank and removed the flat spot where the gas cap sits and rounded it out to follow the line of the drop on the tank. First plan was to run a small tunnel on the tank but Lee wanted to see it mocked up with the bars before closing it up.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-06113817.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-06113817.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Lee and I both agreed t-bars would look sick on this build. Lee fabbed some bars to get an idea of how much rise we should use. At first we tried a 14" rise on the bars but after I sat down I had the bars in my face. So we took 2" off and that was perfect. Comfortable and looks awesome. There will be a slight bend downwards in the bars but I like how they come straight out and no bend towards the front. (Sorry I don't know the tech term)

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-06124245.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-06124245.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

After looking at the tank and bars Lee had a few ideas for the tank. He'll add about an 1"1/4 to the bottom and go without the tunnel.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-06132425.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-06132425.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

As for the the front wheel. After mounting the rear tire I decided to go with a 21" up front. I find the the front and rear look to similar in size.

Seeing this come along I'm happy Lee took on this project.

Buster68
12-07-2011, 1:21 PM
Looking good! When I saw the first side-on picture, my first thought was "that tank would look great just tilted up a shade at the front", and then I saw you did exactly that for the last pic. The bars look great too.

Is that the same seat you had before? [*Disregard: I just checked the first pic on page one - obviously not your original seat - new one looks good]

Any word from the painter?

Looking forward to seeing this come together. I might be headed out to the shop next week as well - I'll let you know if I do

We'll wait until I shave down the levers and clamps.

As for the pull back, these bars are really comfortable in the riding position. I'll get a couple of pics of me on the bike when the tank is done.

I'm doing a rigid style fender with sissy. I really like the look of the kick up fender but I need a sissy to haul my gear.

Not quite sure what color I'm going to go with. Once everything is mocked up I'll have a better idea of what I want.

Tire's a Shinko double whitewall.

I went down to the shop today and Lee made a bunch progress. New 21" front wheel, mocked up the exhaust with turn outs and a sweet 75 stock sporty fender.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-13113907.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-13113907.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I really liked the exhaust so Lee tacked them in to place and welded them up. We thought about adding a few inches to the rear pipe but after staring at them for a while we both agreed that they looked just right.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-13123132.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-13123132.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Afterwards we removed a shit load of wiring, braided lines, oil tank and ignition. We wanted to mock up the fender and had to clear some space.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-13151903.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-13151903.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

We mocked up the fender. There's some clearance issues so Lee cleared some space for the belt, there's still a little adjusting to do for the swingarm.

This fender fits the Shinko tire really well. I like the 3 rivets and plan on keeping them but the other rivets and holes will be cleaned up. We tried it so many different ways and found that keeping it up a little higher keeps the "Crazy Orange" style. Still haven't decided on what sissy I'll be running.

We spent a good amount of time moving the tank back and forward trying to find a good position.. After a while we talked about running a tunnel making the front of the tank sit higher.

Thanks! I'm terrible with "terminology" but if stays are the fender struts ... choppy ..choppy.

Lee had the fender at his shop and this thing is built to last. Even after chopping it, I was impressed of how solid it was.

Bike's gonna be sweet when its done. But how are you gonna add a sissy bar/vertical fender strut from the axle , wouldn't that tie the swingarm and the fender together? If you had rigid struts nothin would move, but since you have those progressive shocks, somethins gonna give.
I'm just goin on what you drew up on your first pic.

The fender needs some tweaking but it should fit nicely.

Spent the day out at the shop with Alex (Heckler) and Lee, and saw a little more of the bike coming together. The main effort today was reshaping the tank, including adding some depth to the front of the tank and then taking some off the back to re-level it, so that it sits up a little higher at the front.

I will add some photos, and then Heckler can add comments as well

I have pics but my camera/phone took a shit and I can't upload them to my computer.

I wanted to update with pics but that ain't going to work. Rob (Buster68) pretty much explained what's going on. There's been a couple of changes to the original plan for the bike. I'm going to lose the rigid style fender and sissy bar combo. Looking at the bike it really wouldn't fit the style, we're going to work on a brat-style fender and a side mounted taillight. I have a Death science taillight that I want to use for this bike but I find that it isn't bright enough but looks fkn awesome so I'll gut it and stuff it with L.E.D'S.

I fkn love the tank, Lee pulled it off. Overall the bike is exactly what I'm going for. I'm just disapointed that I didn't wear my skinny jeans for the pics.

For those who haven't caught on, Lee has now dragged himself out of the last century, and has a CC profile (Bullneck (http://www.chopcult.com/forum/member.php?u=18341)). Maybe at some point he will even start putting some of his parts stash on the classifieds.

He is also responsible for my Panhead, 53 Frisco-style (http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8406), and he's a genuinely cool guy to boot.

His shop blog can be found at American Cycle Service (http://americancycleservice.blogspot.com/). We have added updates on Heckler's bike there as well.

Went out to the shop, we decided to take this build to the next level...haha

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-28105606.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-28105606.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

After removing all that awesomness we tackled the throttle cables, air cleaner and breather. Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of the cable process. We basically lined everything up and tried to make it look as clean as possible. After that we measured and assembled the pull and push cables. Luckily Lee had all the hardware to allow a couple of tries...haha.

I bought a Mooneyes air cleaner kit, it's simple and clean. I also bought an air cleaner bracket that ended up being a pain in the ass. Honestly it would have been easier to fab one instead of all the cutting and realigning that Lee had to do. It didn't line up quite right and left me with gaps that would have cause leaks, no clearance for the fuel line and the throttle cable bracket was rubbing on the engine. Here's some pics.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2011-12-28161358-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2011-12-28161358-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Afterwards we mounted the breather. Lee had a cross member for a big twin at the shop that he chopped and fitted to my bike. I was going to run some benchmark breather bolts but Lee picked up some nice hardware. I like the set-up, it's clean and simple.

I'm stoked, it's coming along and I'm learning a lot from Lee. I ordered a new gas cap and petcock from Lowbrow, we had few questions about the gas cap (venting) and Todd was really helpful. Once everything comes in and the tank is done I'll post some pics but it's already fkn awesome.

I find that it almost gives the frame a cheated stretched look.
I loved the look of this tank immediately, Really tall tank and the bars cartoonishly high...I was really excited when Heckler asked me about doing a real brat style bike. I think the tank being really far back and kind of obnoxious is the whole point with a bike like this. Everybody is doing basic frisco mout peanut tanks....I like that this bike is kind of like a big middle finger to whats become the norm with chops.
Plus it makes everyone who sits on it pants look tighter......and that's good in certain social circles.

Spent a full day out with Alex (Heckler) and Lee (Bullneck) at Lee's shop today. Alex ordered a nice gas cap and sintered filter from Lowbrow Customs, and Lee threw it on the lathe to combine them to make a vented gas cap for the custom tank.

Components:
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/5351/dsc0809k.jpg

Lee drilled a small 1/16th hole through the top, and then drilled and tapped through the bottom of the billet gas cap (which had plenty of material to drill into) to take the threaded filter.

Setting it up on the lathe for a tap guide:

Alex also pulled the engine from the bike, and then we pulled the shocks and rear wheel so that we could cut the rear sub frame struts (Alex says he will probably trim another 1" off the bars as well):

Then we had the find of the month - while rooting around upstairs in Lee's stash, Alex came across an old fender from some rigid bike, that looked like it had lived a life of abuse. But it had a beautiful rolled edge and an upturned lip - perfect for chopping for this bike. Lee was so excited when he saw it that he immediately cut it in half so he could see what it looked like (only afterward did he think to check if it came from some rare model ...):

Thanks Buster for the awesome pics and update.

It was a good day at the shop. Like Buster said we got the motor out so now I'll hit the frame with a grinder and clean it up and remove all the useless tabs.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-06143028.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-06143028.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Lee will cap the open ends. Removing the fender struts changed the look and shrunk the frame and allowed us to mock up the fender.

Next up is the frame. Going to grind off the tabs, cap the stays and clean up the rust and paint. This project has been a ton of fun.

Thanks for checking this out and all the positive feedback. I'm terrible at posting all the little details that go into this build, I don't do it justice. I went to the shop this weekend and Lee made a ton of progress.

Lee mounted the taillight and it looks sweet. At first the plan was to side mount it with the plate but I want people to see me stop and I don't want to hide this thing.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28144611.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28144611.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The lense is tinted and it's still ridiculously bright. Lee hooked it up to a battery and I grabbed some pics.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28092129.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28092129.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28092141.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28092141.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Lee made some changes to exhaust. Originally it was stock length with a 4" turn out added. After removing the stock exhaust mount it left an empty space so 1.5" was removed from the rear pipe to stagger them and that little adjustment looks killer.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28144655.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28144655.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

While Lee was working on the tank I started on the levers. I marked them where I was comfortable and cut them.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28114053.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28114053.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Afterwards I polished them on the wheel. I removed about an inch.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28144846.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28144846.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Lee was working on the tunnel and bottom plate for the tank.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28114102.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28114102.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

To get right look and stance for the tank we had cut out the back. The tank sits approx 3/4" deep on the frame.

I kept working on the clamps. Stuck them in the vise and grinded them down. I filed them to round them and Lee made a nice clean edge with the flap disk.

The fender is mounted and looks clean and strong. The fender is trimmed and looks awesome. The holes have been capped and lip has been adjust to fit between the frame.

<a href="http://s1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/?action=view&amp;current=2012-01-28144558.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/bruceboris1/2012-01-28144558.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The rear exhaust mount is gone and the original tank mount has been capped. These little things change the overall look of the bike. The chain guard tabs have been removed and so has the rust.

I cleaned up the master cylinder cap. I removed the powder coat and took it to the wheel.

Looking good - especially that fender. Nice to see all the little details coming together - the clamps, pipes, frame.

I am still reserving judgement on the position of that taillight; I love the light itself, but right now to me it spoils the lines of that awesome fender, and looks like it is facing up too much. Maybe it will grow on me more when I see it in person. I am trying to get out to the shop on Friday to put in a day's work on the Pan, so I should see it then. I know what you mean about wanting people to see you stopping though - especially with dopey Ottawa drivers.

Are you guys adding a piece to the bottom of the fender to fill in that space above the swingarm?

Overall though the bike is looking killer - what a difference from when you started.

I have the same concerns about my taillight. I have it mounted to the license bracket , but I'm going back and forth in my mind about moving it to the fender.

Bike is looking killer man! Looks like you've got some ideas rolling around about your paint too.

@ Buster There will be a plate mounted to the frame for spray. When we first talked about mounting the taillight on the rear fender I wasn't sure but after seeing it mounted and the tank sitting on the bike I liked it. I find it looks good and goes well with the fuel cap, it has the gas cap sitting high and the the taillight sitting high (it's hard to explain..lol). Let me know what you think when you see it Friday.

@Salty Yeah I'll have some updates on the paint soon. It's going to be good.

I never even thought of that when I was looking at the bike on Friday, but that is an idea - recess the light a bit and mount it under the lip of the fender. Did you and Lee discuss that option at all? It would preserve the nice lines of the curve on the top of the fender

Unfortunately I took some good pics on Friday, but wasn't able to upload the pics from the camera.

I do have some ideas for the seat though ... will chat later

It's got 36 LED reds for brake/run and 10 yellows on each side because I still run turn signals

I stuck it here:

Not good, haha. I basically just went nuts with a hot glue gun.
I'm planning on making a plastic backer to protect it and holds things all together. I can post pics when I finish. Should be later this week
I've been consistently screwing myself over by mis-wiring my LEDs and things like that. It's finally wired straight so I can get to work on actual progress

looks great, im actually using the same fender. becareful with those led's i had a friend that made a tail light with them and it was great at night but during the day it was very hard to see. not that a tail light will help with most of the drivers.

I love Buster's acknowledgement of the balaclava. Who's working on this bike, The Stig?

Thanks for checking out the build.. I've been out of town for a while and haven't had the chance to update. I went out to the shop and took a bunch of pics of the progress, I'll post them soon. Everything is coming together great.

Blacking everything out really cleaned up the bike. The tins are being painted by Tim "Toonz" who painted Buster68's Pan. I'm going with a green and gold color scheme. Buster68 is going to cover the new seat pan. I can't thank Lee enough for the build and learning experience. I still have tons of work to do but riding season seems so far away.

Like I said before I really dig the taillight and where it's located. I don't want to hide it under the fender. But thanks for the suggestions.

Updates to come! With balaclava haha

Since Alex (Heckler) is too busy drinking PBR and riding his fixie somewhere, I thought I would throw a few photos up. Apologies for the picture quality - my main cameras both died so i had to use my phone.

As Heckler said, the tins are away with Timmy "Toonz" Feher (the guy who painted my Panhead) getting some gold and green paint. But some major progress has been done on the rest of the bike.

Alex and Lee took and additional 1 1/4" off each side of the bars, which looks a lot better:

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg131/xr1200/IMG_1626.jpg

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg131/xr1200/IMG_1629.jpg

Lee also shortened the down bend of the rear pipe a bit and then Alex gave them a coat of black oven paint. I think they have sort of an XLCH staggered pipe look - love it

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg131/xr1200/IMG_1637.jpg

We measured out a 1/2" depth and 1" spacing for rivet holes for the seat pan. I am going to try a tuck-and-roll style leather upholstery for the seat - haven't done one before, so I am hoping it turns out well.

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg131/xr1200/IMG_1617.jpg

Position on the bike looks really good. This is a tank Lee is doing for another bike, but very similar to the one he did for Alex which is away for paint. Can't wait to see this thing finished:

After 5 months the build is almost done, there's just a few minor things to finish up. A big thanks to Lee at American Cycle Service. The finished product is amazing!

Over the past two weeks we've got the seat covered thanks to Buster68 the wiring complete and the tins painted.

Today we cleaned up the wiring. All the wiring is located on the splash guard Lee fabbed. It's hidden under seat and looks clean.

When are you bringing the bike back to Ottawa? I have my new camera rig (got it yesterday!), and I was going to swing by the shop to take some pics next Monday or Tuesday. Went out to Lee's shop today to get some pics of a few things for the blog, and Alex was doing another short shakedown ride on the bike (and even let me take it for a spin). This thing is a hoot to ride. Looks good, and handles great. At the end of the day we threw it in the truck and brought it back to Ottawa, so we should be out doing some group rides pretty soon. A little update. Last winter I decided to change up my bike. The "Brat style" wasn't working anymore. I had nowhere to tie anything down and I had to rely on others to carry some of my gear. Haifley Bros came out with the Deluxe hard tail kit and ordered one immediately so I could have the bike ready for the season. Couldn't be happier with the quality and customer service.

Brought the bike over to my buddy Lee's shop. I didn't take many pics of the build, we were rushing to get it done.

Now that riding season is pretty much done I'm completely tearing it down. Plans are to clean up the frame, re wire, actual paint job and a 1200 kit. My buddy and I swapped tanks. I traded my mid tunnel for this Throttle Addiction frisco mount. Pretty stoked to get started being that I'll be doing this on my own with a little help from my friends.

The fun begins! I tore it apart and I'm not wasting any time preping for paint. I got a 21" wheel with drum for the front coming and a cam cover to chop up.

Not much progress. I decided to completely strip the frame. It had quite a few different layers of crap on it. Tremclad, cheap flat black rattle can and powder coating. I used some Gasket Remover and a lot of scrapping. Now I'm going to clean it up with some 220 grit and lay down some self-etching primer.

Quick update.... mostly cosmetic. I decided to try and do my own paint over the winter. Built a little paint booth in the garage and started doing some research. A friend of mine gave me an original Wassell, it was in rough shape but it's exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to smooth it out and give body filler a try.

I cleaned up the oil tank and fender and shot it all with high build primer.

Wet sanded the tins and frame and shot my base coat and clear. I was pretty stoked for my first time trying all this stuff out. I have to wet sand and polish the tins but overall I'm happy with it.

I've never seen primer that colour, but it sure came out smooth. What will the actual paint colour be?

Hot pink! The same colour I'm painting your FXR while you're away. You just ruined the surprise.

I got lucky over the weekend and got a killer deal on this Shovelhead. It's a 71 in an wishbone frame. I going to finish the sporty and start on this. Minor things to, replace the rear master, re wire the whole thing and repair the flux core welds. As you can see from the pics I already broke the bars moving it in the garage.

Also, anyone have any idea what springer that is? I can't find any markings.

Finally got around to putting the sporty together. Had some friends over for some beer and bbq. Solid 3 hrs and this is where we got. Wired it up yesterday and took it off the bench. Few little things to sort out but I'm stoked to get it on the road.

i really dig the new set up....
not as "expected" as some of these pseudo 70s rigs

the way it slowly fades to black front to back gives a cool flow to the bike (chrome, less chrome, no chrome)

Thanks for letting me know, totally forgot since I have the Photobucket hot fix plugin installed on my browser.

That's the plugin link for anyone interested, it fixes all the broken image links.
