I've been riding for 5 years now and have always loved the way bobbers have looked. While I was in TX this year, I bought an 82 KZ 440 LTD to putt around on. Ended up working on it the entire time trying to get it to run. Brought it back home and decided to turn this into a bobber. Found the site while looking for pics of bobbers to gather ideas for mine. Once I finny got her running right, found out her frame was bent at the neck, so I thought I was stuck w/ a running paperweight. Found a frame w/clean title from a friend and will be working on it all winter. Sorry no pics just yet but I plan on taking a crap-ton of pics. I'll post pics of her as she sits right now as well as a list of what I've got planned.

Actually since you want to modify? is this correct? if so, then keep the original frame and start modifying the heck out of it!!! what is this type of motor? please post some pics soon!!! I like lots of photos of modifications and two wheeled adventure machines!!!!

I should have included more info about my project. The KZ 440 is a 2 cylinder. I do plan on cutting up the back end only and turn her into a solo rider. The frame is bend and cracked on the neck so I figured it'll cost a lil more to fix than to buy a clean frame.
I wanted to do a bobber project and figured that this lil 440 would be perfect. Solo seat, super bike or drag or broomstick bars (haven't decided yet), run the exhaust down the right side, forward controls, and a clean, simple paint job are what I've got planned.

Since it has bent areas, with cracks, it would be best to modify the heck out of it, First, do you weld?

PeanutHead

I haven't welded in a long time and no I don't have one either.

HMC, very nicely done dude.
Looks like I might have some time tomorrow to work on my 440 and my shadow since I won't be watching football. So expect some pics to surface.

I will really be looking forward to this build, HWC does some really good work, come on HWC, show us some of your other chops, especially your sohc cb750 chop!!! Well done there too! I think it needs some cow hide that is mangled to our artsy preference!

It's been a while since I posed ANYTHING about my lil project. I've named her Thumper. I have also starting buying a bunch of parts and mocking them up on the bent frame. I installed a set of turn signals from my GS650 on the headlight and love the way them look. I bought a set of 10" shocks for the rear too. Unfortunatly, a few things have come up with work that I have to put Thumper and everything else on hold till I come home. BUT, once i do get home, I'll have plenty of time, when I'm not out riding, to work on, and hopfully finish Thumper. Sorry, no pics yet.

So I was feeling a lil froggy and decided to work on Thumper a bit. I mocked up a set of square turn signals up front. Think I have to cut them down just a bit. Then, I took off the rear fender, shocks, and turn signals. Installed 11in shocks to drop the back end a bit. Looks good IMO. Then started to cut a new fender for the rear. Still need to cut more but I ran out of cut off wheels. I now see a bit I got to cut off in order for her to look a lot cleaner. Here are some pics.

Before.

I think some heavy modifications are in need here! Really! tear that frame down to just the neck and engine cradle, and start making a rigid and possibly a much longer front end, something like a girder, they are the best for cool choppers! I actually go berserk over girders, personally wise that is,,

PeanutHead
03-23-2012, 6:56 PM
This is just the moch up frame. I did decide to knock off the stock rear turn signal mounts and thinking about knocking off the fender mount. But again, I'm deploying soon and don't wanna start on the unbent frame and have to leave. I'm not gonna hard tail this one but its always a thought for the next one.

Just a small update. Since i'm still in Hell right now, i don't have my KZ. BUT, I have been looking around for parts. Since I'm not hard tailling the frame, it's kinda hard to find the tank I want. I'm lookin for a 4.5 to 5 gal tank but that can wait. The 3.whatever gal tank will work for now. The latest part that I bought, I kinda found by accident. This will be the speedo/tach combo I picked up for $60 on ebay. I would like to find someone who makes custom gauges to make one for this combo. What ya'll think?

If I'm not mistaken that speedo/tach was originally mounted in a headlight shell. If you can find the shell you could use that as your headlight. I'm leaning that way with my XS.

The Suzuki x6 Hustler had a set up like your speedo/tach. You can find plenty of pictures with Google. I can't seem to cut and paste them. The Hustler also had an odd-shaped headlight. It was kind of square on bottom but round on top. Check them out.

MTW- you are correct about the headlight. I'm thinkin about doing some kinda of custom mount on the top triple. Debating on the headlight mount.

And for some stupid reason CC won't let me upload anymore pics right now.

I pulled the motor outta the frame then installed 10in rear shocks. Still debating if I wanna use those or the 11in shocks on the bent frame.

Been a long time since I posted anything I've done to the 440. Switched out the rear shocks to the 11in ones, installed custom set of risers, mocked up the rear fender, and installed front forks.

So, I decided its been way too long since I worked on my 440 and did a few things last night. Installed the new headlight ears, headlight, and front turn signals. I had an old cracked fairing I decided to cut up and was going to install it but I still need to do some more cutting. I also made my own sidemount tag bracket. I just hope it holds up while riding. When I get home, I'll post the latest pics.

I've built 4 or 5 kx440s, they are a fun bike to ride, especially when they are all chopped up. Don't let people fool you, they can get up and go, I had a guy tell me top speed is 65, and I had my last one up over 100. Good thing to do is put a kz400 rear sprocket on it, drops it down to a 36 tooth and gives you more top end. Only issues I ever had were with the carbs, they are picky picky, if they aren't perfect, it won't run worth a rank, especially if you do open exhaust with pod filters

Thanks for the info about the sprocket. You wouldn't have the part number or know who sells one off the top of your head would ya?

I planned on still using the stock air box but wanted to cut down the exhaust a bit so the tips are right around where the rear pegs would be. Thats not gonna cause me any to play with the carbs would it?

I don't know man, maybe you Jap bike guys have different definition of Bobber then we do in the American or Brit bike worlds. This looks more like a Euro build or something. Chops or bobs I thought consisted of stripping all unnecessary stuff off a bike not adding big bulky square turn signals to the front?

Holy elitism. :asshat:

Why do people have to be "Jap bike guys" or "American/Brit bike guys?"

I've seen plenty of disgusting Harleys, Trumps, Beezers, Nortons, Yamahas, Hondas, whatever the fuck the brand is. Just like I've seen cool bikes of any brand.

Basically, the brand doesn't matter. If it's cool, it's cool. Elitism is not cool.

I always just ordered mine off eBay. Just the stock kx400 sprocket. The 440 sprocket is a 44 tooth if I remember right and the 400 is 36, same chain size. And far as the exhaust goes, if there's no back pressure, it won't run right. But if you run open exhaust with a modified box, best thing I've found is swapping the jets from an88 to a 95. Seems to work really well, they'll look at you like you're crazy at the parts dept but it works.

Sorry, man didn't mean it to come off as elite Bro. I dig a lot of bikes too. One of my favorite bikes of all time is a Honda cb450 my pops chopped when I was a youngen. All I was saying is it was stated as a bobber build and it seems to be going in more of a Euro direction. Really didn't mean to affend anyone my apologize.

Thanks for the info about the sprocket. I'll be looking for one after I get her on the road.

I call this build a bobber just cuz I have no other idea what to call this build and because I've gotten a lot of inspiration from all types of bobbers. I'd building this bike my way to be comfortable for long solo rides and look cool.

PeanutHead

Figured out why one side of the bars are higher than the other. The shaft on the stock riser is bent.

Mounted my tag bracket and light and I think it looks good. Hope it doesn't bend or brake when I finally get on the road. Also cut the stock seat and foam too. Gonna farm out the re-upholstery to a guy down the street from me. I'm gonna have him cover it in some ABU material I have from an old flak vest.

And no for the bike porn.

Thanks man. I'll take pics in a few. I don't think I'm gonna keep the fender mounted this way. After showing my brother the progress pics and talking things out, we're gonna change up a few things. One thing is I'm gonna do away with the side mount tag for now (need to make a better one), another is to make a custom one off taillight, and lastly is to figure out how to mount the 6 pack rack.

So I haven't really had the motivation after work to wrench on my bike lately. I know, I know, "suck it up and go work." I have been playing around with paint ideas though. Here's what I've decided to do. Made this today on Paint cuz we don't have photoshop or anything that good at work. Flat or low gloss black base and gloss white.

Then I mounted the fender accents. Only mounted one turn signal and also moved the tag back to under the taillight.

So I've been sick this whole damn week and haven't worked on the bike. I have sat in my shop for a few hours just looking at her and coming up with a list of other things to do. I have the back of the seat pan taped in place (pics to come soon). Not sure what else I need to do to it before I send it out to get covered. I figured out that I can use to original headlight ears (with a little tweeking) to be used as the mounts for the rear fender. And lastly, I installed the original fork trip thing to cover up the headlight bracket.

Now here's a question for y'all. Do you think that these prices for powdercoating are reasonable or too expensive?
Frame- $300
Engine-$300

Jetblack
02-24-2013, 11:59 AM
Too expensive; I've heard the chain powdercoatUSA is a good choice price wise...otherwise diy isn't a bad option with the new UV setting powders.

PeanutHead
02-24-2013, 12:02 PM
Those prices were "based on HD prices because we don't normally do Jap bikes." So I'm kinda hoping that I bring them the frame and then they tell me $100 but I'm not that lucky.

Jetblack
02-24-2013, 12:10 PM
Oh in frame? Never mind. Yeah out of frame 300 would be nuts though...

Edit: They must powder coat other shit; unless bike specific...otherwise it just metal in a damn oven either way. I'd look to someone else; some 2nd income guys advert on Craigslist. Sounds like they are Harley is number one guys and giving you a rough time. Fuck those wannabes business is business, go somewhere else.

No, that's the price outta the frame. And I called two places. One was from CL, the other is a straight up powercoating place. The chick on the phone said it might be cheaper since they do a lot of Harley stuff. But again, I'm not lucky enough to have everything done (frame, engine, and mics parts) for $300.

So I started feeling a lot better today and decided to work some more on the bike.

Cut down the ears, bolted them in place, heated and formed to frame, then welded them in place.

After that, and lunch, I cut off the rear hoop. The rear fender seems pretty sturdy so I don't think i need another set of mounting points. I do need to figure out something to do with the freshly cut ends of the frame. Just plug it up or doing something kinda fancy?

Enjoy the bike porn.

PeanutHead
03-02-2013, 9:26 PM
So I didn't work on the bike today because I was at work (sitting in meetings about this stupid fuckin furlough) all day. When I got my lunch break, I decided to do a little parts shopping. Ordered a new throttle, ignition switch, and turn signal switch. I'm hoping that the ignition switch will work with the original harness without major modifications. Not too worried about the throttle or turn signal switch.

Enjoy.

I posted up in the MAIN forum about this but I'll give the cliff notes version here.

I bought some LEDs to install in the center trim piece of my split tank as idiot lights. I bought 2 ambers, 1 red, and 1 blue. They are 2.4V and 4.0V. Then I found out that I need resistors to make them work. I was supposed to get 390 Ohm resistors but I got 330 Ohm instead. The amber ones need the 390 but will that really matter since they are the turn signal indicators?

Jetblack
03-05-2013, 8:56 PM
They will work but burn out faster than than whatever hours they are rated for...I guess it's a toss up between how many hours do you expect to run the signals vs. the trouble replacing the resistors now or everything again at some point...of course I am not an led expert but I have ran some without resistors always on rated at 3w they dimmed quicker than normal but none burned out, the few hours I ran them before I sold it...so some resistance is better than none.

PeanutHead
03-06-2013, 6:07 AM
So I feel like a bit of an idiot. :banghead: After I bought all the LEDs and resistors, I went into my electrical drawer of my tool box to some wires to test out the LEDs and I found two packs of 12V LEDs I had bought YEARS ago that I was going to use as accent lights on my old truck. SO................I'm gonna return damn near everything I bought and use them. I'm gonna use the white ones as the turn signal indicators and just one red for the oil light. I should have checked there before I went and wasted my money.

So last night after work, I did a little mocking up on Thumper. First I built a maintenance stand because I got tired of putting wood under the kickstand. Then I mocked up the 5 gal Fat bob split tank. Holy crap it looks kinda goofy but it'll look pretty cool when everything is done. I've changed my idea for the paint scheme too. Gloss black frame and tan tank & fenders.

Yes they are. Thanks for the compliment man. I originally wanted to use a 5 gal dished in tank but after searching eBay for a few weeks, I found this one (with caps & petcock) for $100 shipped, I couldn't pass this up.

Right now, the tank is just sitting on the frame. I need to install the engine to figure out were the mounts are gonna go. Details pics WILL follow when I do that.

Not much of a progress update but a little one none the less. After talking to my dad today, I've decided to tear apart the old blown engine, remove everything inside it, and use it as a mock up engine. This will also tell me if there is anything worth saving from the old one.

So I've been pretty busy with work, my daily riding bike, and home renovations that I've neglected my project bike. Just wanted to post up a current picture of the 440. If it does rain this weekend, I'll to some more mocking up of the Fatbob tank.

Nice, let me know if you need help with anything...I've got access to a nice miller welder and a plasma cutter and a ton of kz parts laying around

So I've been REALLY slacking off on my project. The other day, I rewelded the fender tabs and FINALLY mocked up the 5gal tank.

Enjoy the (small) progress.

So Saturday I mounted up the Fatbob tanks. After getting them mounted I realized that the right tank has a bent mount. Still looks killer. Also swapped out for another set of bars. Enjoy.

New tanks came in as well as my gas caps. The custom mounts that I had for the old tanks wouldn't work so I found stock mounts at a local place. Didn't have the rear mount so I have to make one at work. I ran into a small problem (I think). The location of the petcock on the new tanks is a lot further forward than the old tank (was close to carbs). Should I level out the bottom of the tanks or relocate the petcock?

If you level out the tanks I think it's gonna look goofy as hell, which would be a shame because this is a gonna be a fucking rad little bike. Moving them shouldn't be a problem. I dig your tach speedo combo. Stoked to see where this goes!

Dropped off the old AND new tanks to get the petcock bung moved. Hopefully I'll have it back this weekend. AND I was able to snag a 2 into 1 exhaust (not sure of brand) for CHEAP!!! Doesn't have a baffle in it either. So I'm debating on which replacement baffle to use. Any suggestions?

See the Suzuki savage build - cool baffle in there from a straight exhaust pipe

The other day I was directed to another build thread about a custom made exhaust baffle. Found some scrap exhaust pipe at work, cut it down, made some cuts, then used the hydraulic press to bend in the cuts. TADA!!!!!!!!! Now I just need to make an end cap for it.

Cool bike there man! Always thought about a hardtail but I think the drop seat frames are the best parts of these bikes & can be exploited well.
Here's a couple pics of some of the different stages of the my kz..not a hot rod but its my baby!

be glad to do u one up...

could you do something like this to a kz750 frame? what's the cost of materials and skill required? I like how you kept the stock engine cradle and worked the hardtail off of it.

Anything is possible. I'd get in contact w/ him and check. HWC did those frames himself.

Wow I'm such a lazy bastard. Its almost been a full year since I've done ANYTHING to my project bike. This weekend, I'll be back in my shop (garage) to start working on it once again. Dummy/mock up motor is coming out, good motor will go in. Maybe even run the wireing harness too.

HWC how do you make the lower rail connect to the existing frame for the 440s you show here? Sorry don't mean to hijack, I have a build thread with this question and nobody has answered it yet.
