View Full Version : change to smaller gas tank on rubber mount sporty

I'd like to change to an older or just smaller tank on my 06 sportster. I've noticed that some of the tanks I see have the petcock bung on the right side, but mine is on the left with the vacuum line on the right.

so....are there options for ones that I can just swap on where the petcock and vacuum will line right up, or will i be needing to modify an old tank to work with my setup?

thanks!

the petcock side is the least of your worries, in fact it doesn't matter. the problem is the 04+ sportys have a much larger backbone than the previous models so tanks wont fit without putting a bigger tunnel in it. unless of course you get a flat bottom "frisco" tank, but then you will have to make some new mounts on your frame and it sounds like you are looking for bolt on.

I'll check out that specialseventynine website. And as far as mounting the tank, I'm definitely not only looking for bolt on as i know a smaller tank won't fit my stock tank mounts, is just having to weld the actual lines on the bottom of the tank I'm seeing if I can avoid.

I'm not sure which years of tanks would have the petcock and vacuum on the same side as mine....

This is why I like this site. Someone asks a legitimate question and nobody makes fun of him or gives him a hard time for not being a seasoned vet of bike building.

so, has anyone done this? any pics of smaller tanks on newer sporties, especially ones still with the swingarm intact?

I sold a guy this bike last year and he had T-bone do up a smaller tank for it. It's not a rubbermount though, it's a 97. I like it alot.

I know this is an old thread but I came across it while searching. I have recently had Jay from Special79 take a 2.2 mustang and weld a wider tunnel and 22mm bung in it. I also switched to a pingel petcock. Here it is mocked up, still waiting for someone to weld in bungs in backbone. He did a killer job with the tank.
