dstarc178
10-28-2009, 9:29 PM
No, I got it from a guy in Northfield. I went out for a dirtbike tank and I ended up walking into a warehouse full of old motorcycles.

Chad, that's the roller I bought. I'm selling the original one I had to my buddy who may chop it up after he gets comfortable riding. I picked up another xs650 for cheap and took the motor from it.. how's your bike coming along?

I was going to use stock front endwith my 21" (for sale, 80 shipped!) but i changed my mind. I'll be using a dna springer front cut down as low as possible with a fat 16 on front. this will be one of those profile bikes.. looks good but probably not the comfiest ride. i'll keep you guys updated on progress.

More updates.. brought the other fatboy rim up front. Hoping to get a low and different look. Picking up a 4 under springer for front and might even cut a lil' more off to keep a low profile bike. I'm also going double stripe.

Diggin it, stick with that mystery gas tank! Too many wassels out there already.

chopsticks
11-19-2009, 2:49 PM
Have to agree with TNTrash I think the wassel is sexy but it would be more different with the other tank and I think they both equally compliment the bike. With that said the stance is sick, love the short springer and the wheels will make that bike. Great job, I will continue to watch this build it is going to be sick.

dstarc178
11-19-2009, 9:30 PM
motor in, now i gotta track down odds and ends.. i like the first tank but it doesn't give me the right lines that i'm trying to get. with the first tank, it's more of a seated back mini ape look. i'm going for a low and fast look and i think the wassell rep works... but i'll be painting it the same color as the first. enjoy!

nuts. What brand springer is that? DNA? looks good.

dstarc178

it's a dna springer i got off of ebay for 390 shipped. cna't beat the price, it's a -4" under springer front.

philbey
11-24-2009, 5:54 PM
Fantastic. My stock front end is giving me grief so I might just cheat and throw a springer on, depending on shipping to Oz.

I was looking at my webbing behind neck last night trying to work out what to do with it. I notice yours appears to have been smoothed? Could you grab a better pic of it for me?

philbey
11-24-2009, 5:56 PM
actually looking at that pic again it looks like you haven'y smoothed it out, but your standard frame is quite a bit different to mine by the look of it.

been waiting on parts, waiting for my headlight, springer shock dampener, sprockets, fender, and brake calipers.. in the meantime, spacers were made and the front bulky nuts on the spriner were replaced with buttonheads to give it a smooth look, rather than jutting out. i got my hairpin springs and looks like with the fender, there will be a perfect amount of space for everything. i'm also figuring out my oil tank for the electronics. it'll look like a mooneye tank or the same style.

Another small update from today... Still trying to decide on the electronics setup, maybe hidden between the frame under the seats. or an oil tank, smaller than the copper canister. fender should be in very soon so i'll can get a better look at everything overall.

Yeh there's a fair bit of info on putting springers on the XS's, I reckon 650rider has a couple of threads on it. Its as simple as a bearing swap.

The Jap stuff varies a bit as far as steering stem diameters though, I have a list around here somewhere......

Chk my XS out that I did, I got a super small alarm battery, re-wired the bike to a minimum, ripped the starter out and everything fit in a box that was 6" high, 3" deep and 4.5" across.

been playing around with tank designs.. i've decided to call my bike, "fat yama" fatboy wheels... yamaha... get it? i'm gonna start drawing up a pinup girl and maybe incoroporate some gold pinstriping. here's a picture i found at a bookstore along this line.

not too much progress lately but here's a sneak peak. here's a mock up of the shock and headlight.. i'm not completely sold on the angle of the the headlight bracket yet.. also, i think i'm going to go oil tankless. i like the look of a bare frame or "minimalist" look... besides, the xs650 never needed one, so why use one? thanks for the comments guys!

Digging this build. Keep the updates coming! 100% agreement on ditching the oil tank. It's migthy clean without it.

I think I'm running the same exact headlight. Is that drop light bracket spot weled to the shock or something? Kinda janky. I think it'd look sharper with a minimal tab mount off either the lower or upper shock mount bolts. I've seen a few bikes recently with high mount lights and low bars that looked real sharp. The light ends up being the highest thing on the bike!

The double WW tires are flippin sweet on those fat boys! love it.

What's your plans for brakes?

dstarc178
01-09-2010, 10:08 AM
If ya look closely, the headlight bracket is coming off of a tube around the shock.. Which is connected to the solid springer fork so when ya hit a bump, you don't get a bouncy headlight beam. I'm still not 100% sold on it but will be working on making it slightly better looking... I haven't been able tk find by closeups of springer shocks at all..

that is indeed the slim mikes xs one. I was under the impression there was no mirror hole too but mine has one. I'll probably cut it off since I won't be using two mirrors.

glad ya like it, the hardtail is actually the universal hardtail kit from tcbros. it's a nice kit since all the bends are already there and you can choose to make your hardtail any way you want.

Man, you got a great eye for style and shape.
The bike looks low, thick and solid. Really nice form.
The spun rims make it look like you're moving when you're standing still.
In this photo, it looks like you're going to fly off the page.....

Minnesota is getting very nice, been in the 70's the past week but it's getting a little chilly again. I know where Blaine is, use to play soccer there a lot!

Here are some pics... so close to done. Wiring is the main goal, hopefully in a day or two we'll have the bike running.

Sickleboy,

The DNA really isn't as bad as people say it is. Then again, this is my show bike and barhopper around the cities. I've hit some pretty crazy potholes and bumps and it does just fine. I think the ride would be worse without the damper though. It gets a good two inches of travel on the damper and definitely keeps the ride much smoother. As for the bearing size, I'll have to look it up for you... the info should be on this forum somewhere too. Here's a better picture of the shock setup for ya, hope it helps..

That thing is awesome. I like how low it is. and the big tires make it look awesome. What did you do with that SST tank. I bought one on ebay it was not in as good shape but I love the badges and mine are cracked.

I was told it was off of a Gemini mini bike but I dont know how accurate that is.

Looks great ride the piss out of it.

dstarc178
02-19-2011, 10:23 PM
I'm all about the compact and finding the lines on each bike. Just gotta have the patience to sit back and brainstorm. The tank I ended up selling but I should have kept it for another project. It's off a Gemini SSR mini bike. Took me awhile to figure that one out. I'm throwing on a pillion pad and just handpainting the rest of the frame black and then I'm definitely going to ride the piss out of it. I like bikes with a broken in look.

The hardtail is the TC Bros universal kit, custom cut to the way I wanted it. I believe it's about a 3.5" stretch and not sure about the drop but I'm about 4.5" off the ground. The DNA springer front is -4" under which just about levels out the bike.

Thanks for all the compliments guys, this bike is very dear to me. Can't wait to start riding again. In the meantime, keep an eye out for another project I'm starting. Building a Boardtrack racer inspired bike! :D

Hey guys, back again. Not too much has happened, I recently purchased an old truck so that's been consuming my time. I've been riding this bike hard and just letting it age over time. I'll probably clean the bike up once winter comes around and refine it a bit more. Here are just some shots taken by a photographer friend. We'll be shooting with some pinup girls soon and trying some mag submissions hopefully. Oh, and I'll probably be throwing on a front fender too.

I did use an emgo one I believe... but I didn't use the clamp. The Clutch lever had a hole for a mirror so the mirror was cut short and tapped for it. Hope that helps. Here are a couple more pictures... Sorry I should have fixed the mirror before pictures.

So I'm more of a harley guy but just recently started loving the xs bikes. I picked one up and just started another build on it. I was actually looking at doing the two 16' wheels as well. I did have a question: Did you fab your hardtail section? It looks like the David Bird hardtail.

I'm glad you're giving Japanese bikes a shot! I'm moving in the opposite, the next build of mine will be an old ironhead. I'll see if I can give it make it stand and give it some flare. As for the hardtail, I bought the TCBros universal kit and had it made to have the drop seat. The XS frame has some good lines, which is why I had the tail starting below the backbone. Hopefully that makes sense/helps.

Cool bike, I really like the fat tires, would look so fucking rad with an old harley springer on it... would probably cost as much as the bike though haha.

I know its been a long time since you started but do you still have that extended front end around? what is it like 6 over? I might be looking for one for my xs...
