its all so middle school anyways isnt it? arent those bands they listed dead and in the grave by now anyways? i havent seen or heard mtv or the radio in quiet some years but im sure kids have moved onto a new trend by now (with all the A.D.D. and all....) arent the kids in the midwest trading out their hot topic for street wear or gangster boutique/street rap these days?

hahaha. that is really funny. Hot topic by my house is all hardcore emo bands, and bob marley. so whack. It is better to just sit on the bench in front of the store and just make fun of the people who go in and out of it. better yet, its way better to just not go to the fucking mall.

blows my mind what the kids are doing these days (fuck i sound old and i just turned 29....jebus)

i saw a couple had to be 15...16....17.. in a style i would call S&M meets matrix meets avril lavine... rocking 20 chains on a wallet 100 hole boots but wearing blanks 77 shirt.... it really threw me off.. "to each his own" i guess...not going to knock someones "style" but i will shake my head with a raised eyebrow at it.

10 years of bubble economy killed punk. when you have a lot of money you can be an entertainment consumer, punk was born from have-nots doing it themselves. it'll swing back the other way now that poeple have to work instead of cashing the value out of their homes.

I'm not gonna go into some big speech about it but there are still great NEW punk/hardcore bands out there. Anyone who writes up stuff like this needs to spend a weekend in Southern California.

in NYC you used to be able to walk down to 8th street and find a punk or hardcore show any Friday or Saturday night. good luck trying that now.

That's because most of the heavy hitting NYHC bands are done playing. Urban Waste and a few other old NYHC bands still do tours but there isn't much new school stuff coming out right now from NY for the most part. PA and VA are throwing good bands out left and right though.

true but the bands didn't just up and quit, the scene was displaced and venues were shuttered -- because of demographic changes and guiliani's anti-venue policy. there was still a lot going on in jersey and LI when I left in 2007 and people were moving to philly in herds, not sure how it is now. can you recommend any good PA or VA HC bands?

and note I didn't mention or blame hot topic. heh

I remember the days where if you even went into a Hot Topic you were considered a loser (meaning a real punker, metalhead, etc.). Now it's the most popular store in malls across the nation catering to "tween" emo bands and such. Times change I guess.

But like said, if you want to see any real punk/hardcore/metal or whatever underground music is your thing, you gotta go to where it's always been. The streets!

hahaha, this store wasnt even around when there were actual punk rockers and such running around - gawd damned Green Day started that mess with the resurection of tight pants and big hair.
The only Punk Rock shops that were around when I was a kid was Nana's in SF to buy Monkey Boots and Docs, army surplus and the five and dime - thats it...fucking hot topic!

Berlin wall in chula vista, and a slew of stores on melrose if we are talking about early 80's stores in southern california, but then the sex pistols were sponsored by a clothing store pushing the "new" fashion, so really is hot topic any different?

regardless lots of good bands out there from all over the world still doing it.

TemeculaTerry
10-05-2009, 3:24 PM
The Sex Pistols were in the world of British punk, not the hardcore punk scene that most USA punks were into - thrashers or suicidals as well called ourselves; and yeh, the sex pistols were just about the same as what is going on now if you take away the originality and talent - lol
man, talking about this brings back memories how we used to skool those British punk rockers with their make up and fancy bright colored hairdo's. Fight with the Nazi punks, hang with the mods and new wavers to get their girls, bum with the Cholitos and lowriders so we had back up, throw down with stoners because they were fucking loosers and hated on us for having girls, getting teased by the preps and jocks but couldnt do anything about it or we would get kicked out of school and harrasing the hick cowboy dudes to see them all scramble around in their cowboy boots -
yeh, 80's were a good time.... ye,h there is still a whole scene that is still doing it well.

I think the "Hot Topic" store is just about as lame as the people who people who put it down - who gives...really!

exactly... the article is pointless. I havent watched it in a couple years, but
Punks Not Dead (great documentary, check it out) had some coverage on this exact topic.
It had some mixed reactions, but I'd have to agree with Jorge from the Casualties. Hot Topic gives exposure to people that, even today, may not realize this type of movement/music exists. We arent so lucky to all grow up in southern cali, have great local shops and venues, and have older siblings for influence. If Hot Topic is the major influence that gets a kid curious about punk rock when growing up in a place like northern Utah, so be it. Punk rock is more about being true to yourself, and ignoring what authority, religion, and society have to say than it is about fashion, and that will never die.

First I want to know how your "selling out" by selling your own shirts and cds at your show? It's a diy thing not all bands have labels fronting money for the cds and shirts. Second yes this is a chopper forum but most people into these types of bikes are also passionate about music also. Music is one of my biggest passions in my life as well as bikes. I would have to say this thread fits on this board. I didnt know that Rancid wasnt a punk band anymore because they were/are on tv and on the radio. Hell if that were the case alot of 80's punk bands werent punk anymore because I've seen old black flag videos on tv and alot of old punk bands on the radio. I understand that hot topic is "poser central" for the most part but I go there to buy plugs cause they have a good selection and they also have some good cds and shirts that I cant just go to most stores and buy and I'm to inpatient to buy online. I can guarantee that I'm not a "poser".

Social Distortion has been carrying the punk flag for over 30 years now. I was born in 1980, about the same time as they were starting to gain a wide audiance, and i still think they are relevent today as a punk band. And i bought both my Social D shirts from Hot Topic. So who really gives a fuck where you get the stuff you wear. Afterall, the clothes dont make the man.

Pantsbeer

Exactly thats kinda the point I was trying to make. I have a derby style hat that I bought there years ago a friend asked me were I got it and I told him. He said I wouldnt say that to loud and I told him I dont really give a fuck who knows I go in there. It's stupid. Hot topic isnt ruining music today it's the mainstream bullshit. Hot topic actually carries real punk/harcore.

According to the Silver Jews (great band, not punk), "Punk Rock died when the first kid said, 'Punk's not dead.'"

David Berman said it. I believe it. That settles it.

I am often awash in the overwhelming irony of Hot Topic - kids going to buy their counter-cultural cool from those same bastions of commerce that sell cool to the mainstream. Brilliant. Damn, I'm too cynical.

We've got two in town.

On the west side, it's all emo-punk.

On the north side, it's all Black Label Society and goth.

Regardless of which one you step into, it's a bunch of sad little kids trolling around, waiting for their moms to pull the Mercedes SUV around to chauffeur them to the next mall to buy an identity.

shit!! yall need to come down to florida. the band im in and the band we play and tour with are all hc or deathmetal. we really dont fit into either of those but alot of people lable up as hc/punk because of our additude. our first shirt says" i just dont give a shit" in giant block letters. i feel that punk is an additude, or way of life, not a style of music. just like "biker". we could start a whole thread on that shit. but i digress.....
i think it just turned into an easy way to identify that sound. i think the word punk has no meaning anymore.

HOLY SMOKES!!! did I just hear someone mention badluck 13... I used to see these guys in philly... they were pretty much banned from playing anywhere in jersey due to the destruction... bottle rockets flying, the infamous bat wrapped in barbwire... good stuff.. I still have their cd lying around here....

Dublinmatty which club? We had a lot of great ones in the area (floodzone in rva, pepermint at the beach, the boathouse in norfolk, and the 9:30 was only 2 hours away). Plus a lot more whose name I can't remember. Hell there was even a strip club(crystal palace) that booked us on accident when I was 16 and let us play with our faces to the wall. But in a town that produced Gwar, Strike Anywhere, and Lamb of God. It's hard to find a good punk or hardcore show. Its a shame.

i booked the Atlantic Beach Club (inside the Haunted House) from 88-90ish...
It started out as a bitchin old theatre and then they built the haunted house inside and reduced capacity to about 400....

I remember the Floodzone, twisters, up in richmond...
used to see the Ramones at the boathouse every year for $5
930 club was always worth the roadtrip to DC

My last show i booked was Fugazi at the Peppermint Beach Club in about 92 i think...then was there for Body Count at the Peppermint with all the Police...

If you guys are talking about punk here is one that you can not forget, maybe a group of brothers that could be some of the biggest pioneers in American Punk.<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hkGEvb-OGow&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hkGEvb-OGow&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Only thing I miss about California is the music scene... and the weather.. I got to see Blood For Blood in SanFran right before the Mil moved us, friggin awesome show. Badluck13 is banned from damn near every place they ever played and wanted in most jurisdictions lol. MD has a decent scene... the Side Bar was a cool hang out.

Nice, I love it!!! things were so much better and simpler then. My previous post made me watch "Another State of Mind" again and bands now adays of so many outlets to get out there. Back then you had bands using the old card numbers to book shows around the country and sleeping on random couches.

All those early SoCal Punk bands are great. Youth Brigade put out a 25th anniversary of BYO and Youth Brigade about a year ago and it is a great book that comes with a DVD, and then 31 tracks in CD and Vinyl. It is all of those old bands covering each others songs. If your into it check it out its some good shit.

Hell I was just having fun seein bands I wanted to see and enjoy; though I remember when Dr Know played for the -imagine the earth with 3rd degree burns tour- and i was talkin to them after and sayin how i wanted to see them a few years before and their answer was ...
" what when we were punk rock"?

well actually yeah it was your early albums that turned me onto the band- wasnt really into the speed metal in the late 80s and thats when everyone started "crossing over"....

They put it on every year the BYO crew started it like 12 or 13 years ago it usually comes down to them or Epitaph winning it each year. I wish I was able to go not only cause Vegas always rocks but a ton of old Punks running around in Sin City is about as crazy as you can get.
